In simpler terms, I usually refer to my typical speed in Avowed as “extremely fast.” With treasures hidden everywhere, I find myself rushing through the Living Lands, snatching items left and right, taking brief breaks to stockpile food between fights.
It eventually became clear to me that it’s beneficial to slow down and take some time off occasionally. Going back to camp offers a chance for free healing, equipment upgrades, enchantments, food preparation, and friendly conversations with your companions. However, an aspect often overlooked is that it can also provide new insights into the lore and even initiate new quests.

The trick is to establish a regular sleep routine in the game, but it’s not immediately clear how to do this. Contrary to what you might expect, you don’t need to enter a tent or find a bed. Instead, you have two options: approach the Adra pillar within the camp and interact with it, or walk to the camp’s edge, select ‘exit’, and then resume when you wake up. Somehow, this action in the game is considered sleeping, whereas quickly traveling to your next destination doesn’t seem to register as sleep.
While you’re asleep, it seems as though you engage in a conversation with an enigmatic inner voice. This voice provides commentary on past adventures and decisions you’ve made, allowing your reactions to develop your connection with it and provide insights into its character.
In Dawnshore, I received a unique sidequest called “Call of the Past.” This mission isn’t spoiler-free, but it provides vital story details and some potent rewards, such as an impressive magical weapon. Although you might accidentally discover its location while wandering, accepting the quest leads you directly to it, making it easy to overlook otherwise.
In the Emerald Stair region, I didn’t come across a mission similar to the one I had before, although such encounters can be discovered through exploration. It’s unclear if there are more of these missions in dreams or if this is a one-time thing. However, the conversations that advance the story have indeed continued.
Sleeping carries no negative consequences; it’s entirely up to you when and how often to rest in Baldur’s Gate 3, much like there are no real-life repercussions for taking a break during your adventure. The game’s design ensures that any sense of urgency is just an illusion, allowing you to pause the action whenever needed without fearing missed opportunities or failed quests due to time passing.
In everyday life, just like in a game, maintaining a consistent sleep pattern forms the basis for good health. Regrettably, I can’t guarantee that your waking-life dreams will be as insightful or beneficial, though.
