Nosferatu’s Mustache Explained
If you’ve watched 2024’s Nosferatu, there was one detail that left a lasting impression on you as you exited the theater: his mustache. Despite the vampire character possessing numerous unusual traits such as sores on his skin, long fingernails, and hypnotic eyes that seem to bore into your very soul, it’s the mustache that truly stands out. Director Robert Eggers recently spoke with Variety about the decision to give the character a mustache.
To create a more terrifying vampire than we’ve seen in a while, Eggers returned to the original folklore. He found this approach appealing because the early stories were written by people who genuinely believed in vampires. The vampires of these tales are rotting, walking corpses, which made for an intriguing starting point. So, he wondered, “What would a dead Transylvanian nobleman look like?” His costume would feature a complex Hungarian attire with long sleeves, high-heeled shoes, and a furry hat. A mustache was also essential, as it’s a significant part of the culture. It’s rare to find a Transylvanian of age who doesn’t have a mustache. If you’re unfamiliar, consider Vlad the Impaler. Even Bram Stoker included a mustache for Dracula in his novel.
Nosferatu is also available to watch on Prime Video, iTunes, and other digital retailers.
