Neil Druckmann, head of Naughty Dog, has shared that there are no hidden plans for follow-ups to “The Last of Us,” as per his statements at the DICE Summit. He expressed doubts about creating a sequel due to its potential challenges, noting that he doesn’t currently possess the necessary confidence to undertake such a project, based on IGN’s report.
During a chat with Cory Barlog from Sony Santa Monica, Druckmann expressed that he generally views games not as ongoing franchises but rather treats each game’s story as a standalone release within the series.
In response to the question about character development across several games, Druckmann replied, “This question is quite straightforward for me as I don’t tend to ponder over multiple games because the game we’re currently focusing on is so engrossing and demanding all my attention.
When working on the initial game, it’s better not to ponder over potential sequels. So when creating “The Last of Us 2”, I occasionally had thoughts about where things might progress if given another chance to continue the story. However, I primarily focused on, ‘what if there won’t be another one?’…I don’t hold back ideas for a future project. If an idea is compelling, I strive to incorporate it into this game itself.
Druckmann elaborated on this line of thinking, saying that when it’s time for a sequel to one of his games, he reflects upon the original title to determine where he can develop the characters and what storylines remain unexplored. If he feels that the characters have reached their narrative limits, then he considers, “I think we might decide to end their journey instead.
He went on to say, “I’m partially teasing, but let’s move on to the next project.” When creating Uncharted 1, we never anticipated the train sequence in Uncharted 2, or where Nathan Drake would end up. We didn’t know until we developed Uncharted 2. Similarly, as we worked on Uncharted 3 and later Uncharted 4, we found ourselves asking, ‘How can we avoid repetition? Where else could this character journey lead? What fresh adventure can take him there?’ We had to continually come up with new ideas. If we couldn’t, we should question whether this is still the right character and the right project for us. If not, it might be time to seek out something new.”
Instead, Barlog discusses the concept of crafting complex narratives that extend across multiple games, drawing an analogy to the popular TV series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” specifically the scene where Charlie Day’s character obsessively searches for a hidden, grand conspiracy.
Barlog stated, “It’s incredibly enchanting, yet undeniably the most taxing task one could encounter, as it requires intricate folding and connecting of numerous parts. Over approximately five years, hundreds of individuals are typically involved, and with each new project comes a fresh wave of people who bring their unique perspectives, preferences, and potential reservations. This can create a challenging environment when trying to establish something early on, as they might voice concerns such as, ‘Let’s discuss this, as I’m not sure if I want to proceed with that idea.’
Druckmann responded by saying, ‘For me, that demands a confidence level I don’t possess.’ In other words, he feels unsure about where this is heading in the long term.
Neil Druckmann has been a long-term member of Naughty Dog, contributing to several highly praised video games such as the Uncharted series, The Last of Us, and its sequel. At present, the studio is engaged in creating an entirely fresh game titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, destined for the PS5. This upcoming project has been likened to the influences of ‘Akira’ and ‘Cowboy Bebop’.
