Lately, comedy movies haven’t been getting much attention. Compared to other genres, a very small percentage of new releases are comedies – whether they’re fresh, innovative films or the latest in a familiar series. It’s surprising to look back at some of the biggest comedy hits from the 2000s and realize that many haven’t had sequels in years, or the comedic teams behind them haven’t made anything new.
With comedies like The Naked Gun (2025) attempting to bring back popular big-screen comedy, it looks like the genre might be making a comeback. That’s likely why we’re hearing that a beloved, classic comedy series could get a third movie – seven years after the last one.
Kevin Smith launched his career with the 1994 indie comedy Clerks, which centered around two laid-back young men working at a small New Jersey convenience store. The film introduced the memorable characters Jay and Silent Bob (played by Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith), a pair of drug dealers who frequented the store. These funny and unconventional characters became instant fan favorites and appeared repeatedly throughout Smith’s work – a connected universe he calls the “View Askewniverse.” They’ve popped up in Clerks, Clerks II, Clerks III, Mallrats, Dogma, Chasing Amy, as well as in Scream 3 and an episode of the TV series The Flash. Smith even created a spin-off film series for the duo, beginning with Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) and continuing with Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019).
Jay and Silent Bob: Store Wars Is A Grand Stoner Comedy

Kevin Smith has confirmed he’s making another Jay and Silent Bob movie, titled Jay and Silent Bob: Store Wars. He told Collider that despite the challenges, they’ve secured funding for the project.
The film’s title hints at its themes. Jay and Silent Bob are long-running characters in Kevin Smith’s movies, and they’ve often represented broader ideas – reflecting shifts in society or stages in Smith’s own life, especially through Silent Bob’s thoughtful speeches. Clerks III (2022) openly explores Smith’s personal experiences with a health scare and his journey into middle age, and it also includes a humorous storyline about how Jay and Silent Bob fit into a changing world.
As a big fan, I was so excited to hear Kevin Smith talking about Clerks III! He explained that Dante and Randal finally own a weed dispensary now that it’s legal in New Jersey, which is awesome. And the new movie, Store Wars, is basically a hilarious battle between their shop and a new dispensary that opens right across the street. It’s a total *Spy vs. Spystyle rivalry, and he says it’s a really top-notch stoner comedy – honestly, he sounds thrilled about it, and that makes me even more hyped!
The film continues the franchise‘s habit of drawing inspiration from the Star Wars movies. The title “Store Wars” is a particularly clever nod to the series that influenced the filmmaker, and feels like a concept with potential beyond a small independent project. The first film had a budget of $22 million and earned $33.8 million, while the second was a lower-budget indie costing $10 million that only played in theaters for two nights, but still made $4.7 million. Hopefully, the third film will find a sweet spot with a mid-range budget.

If you remember the earlier Clerks movies, Clerks III finds Dante and Randal now running a marijuana dispensary, since cannabis is legal in New Jersey. The movie, which feels like a playful rivalry, centers around a new dispensary opening across the street, and the rest of the film is about their escalating battle to sabotage each other. It’s a really funny stoner comedy, and I genuinely enjoyed it.
