Is Godzilla the Ultimate Ambassador for U.S.-Japan Relations?

The iconic creature, known as the King of Monsters, is gearing up for a comeback on various platforms. In Japan, director Takashi Yamazaki is working on a sequel to his version of the lizard king, following the success of Godzilla Minus One. Meanwhile, in North America, Legendary Entertainment is planning the third installment in the Godzilla x Kong series and developing a television show for Apple TV+. In an intriguing interview, the President of Toho suggests that Godzilla could serve as an ideal envoy to the West, given its widespread popularity and ability to foster connections, as it has been crowned the king among monsters.

At Washington D.C., Hiroyasu Matsuoka, the president of Toho, was one of the main speakers at the U.S.-Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Exchange. This event is usually designed to enhance collaboration between North America and Japan. Given their mutual affection for Godzilla, the monster icon, Matsuoka proposed a creative idea: making Godzilla an ambassador. Emphasizing the impact of culture on individuals, he suggested that the Western interpretation of the popular kaiju had influenced the Eastern Godzilla.

In Washington D.C., Hiroyasu Matsuoka, Toho’s president, spoke at the U.S.-Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Exchange. This conference aims to boost cooperation between North America and Japan, especially considering their shared fondness for Godzilla, the iconic monster. Matsuoka proposed an innovative idea: using Godzilla as an ambassador. He highlighted the role culture plays in shaping people’s perspectives, suggesting that the Western interpretation of Godzilla had impacted the Eastern version of the creature.

Godzilla’s Influence

During his on-stage appearance, President Matsuoka explained that the modern reboots of Godzilla, such as “Shin Godzilla” and “Godzilla Minus One,” were inspired by the American interpretation of the legendary monster. He added that while this influence may have been unintentional, both American creators and Toho creators have impacted each other’s work in shaping the Godzilla franchise.

In terms of the depiction of the lizard king between Western and Eastern perspectives, it’s expected that North American viewers will get to see more Godzilla than Japanese kaiju fans beforehand. Legendary Entertainment is planning to launch the third installment in the crossover series of Godzilla x Kong on March 29th, 2027. Although there’s a chance that the sequel to Godzilla Minus One might come out before then, it seems improbable that Yamazaki will confirm Godzilla’s comeback by that time. Additionally, the second season of Monarch: Legacy of the Monsters is being produced, and a secret spin-off series promoted by Apple TV+ is in the works as well.

Godzilla’s Upcoming Crossovers

One significant manner in which Godzilla is making its impact towards the West is through the forthcoming Marvel crossovers by the North American comic book publisher. Later this year, the Monarch of Monsters will go head-to-head with characters like The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and the Avengers. Previously, Godzilla was seen battling the DC Universe alongside Kong in a comic series, so it’ll be intriguing to observe how Godzilla compares to some of Earth’s strongest superheroes.
