Microsoft’s Plan to Bring Back Classic Games Using AI

With Microsoft unveiling a novel AI system for creating video game highlights, Xbox’s CEO Phil Spencer expresses enthusiasm over the potential application of AI in supporting Xbox’s endeavors to preserve classic games.

During their discussion with Dom Matthews from Ninja Theory studio and Katja Hofmann, who leads the Microsoft Research Game Intelligence team, Spencer expressed his thoughts on employing AI models educated through gameplay for use in classic video games.

At Xbox, one topic we are deeply passionate about is game preservation. I envision a scenario where models can learn to play older games, titles that were designed for specific hardware, whose engines may degrade over time and reduce the number of devices capable of running them. In essence, this technology would allow these old games to be made compatible with any platform, offering a world of possibilities. This is truly an exciting development as it expands our efforts in game preservation.

Reaction: A great use for new technology

For a brief instant, putting aside my inherent skepticism about the realm of announced AI advancements, this application of generative AI in games stands out as more captivating than any other idea I’ve encountered so far. The concept of an AI model learning from an older game and assisting in the process of upgrading that game for significantly modern hardware is intriguing, and I’m eager to observe if Microsoft and Xbox make any headway in this area as time passes.

Let’s continue fostering such thoughts. I prefer humans, not AI, to be the ones crafting game universes, narratives, artwork, and literature – keeping the essence of human creativity intact.
