Over time, Marvel Comics has developed numerous versions of the Hulk, the iconic character known for his green or occasionally gray skin. While some Hulks resemble the original in many ways, others deviate significantly. Interestingly, there are also variations of the green Hulk, primarily stemming from Bruce Banner’s Dissociative Identity Disorder. This versatile character has served as a rich source of inspiration, enabling the Hulk to appear in numerous engaging stories. Introducing these diverse Hulk colors has broadened the concept and opened doors for the Hulk to feature in an even wider range of tales.
Nine distinct versions of Hulk have appeared so far, each with varying abilities, some more intimidating than the traditional green Hulk at his peak strength, while others are less formidable. Some lesser-known variations exist, even among the most dedicated Hulk enthusiasts. Here is a list, in order, of the nine colored versions of Hulk, ranked by their powers:
1. Green Hulk – The original and most well-known version, known for his immense strength and uncontrollable rage.
2. Red Hulk – A more controlled and intelligent version, created through a combination of gamma radiation and Super-Soldier serum.
3. Grey Hulk – A calmer and more rational version, who retains intelligence and control even in stressful situations.
4. Bruce Banner’s Hulk – The Hulk form that Bruce Banner transforms into when he becomes angry or stressed.
5. Skaar – A powerful green-skinned Hulk from a distant planet, who is the son of the original Hulk and a powerful warrior in his own right.
6. She-Hulk – A female version of the Hulk, with similar strength but more intelligence and control over her emotions.
7. Red She-Hulk – A more aggressive version of She-Hulk, who was created through a combination of gamma radiation and Super-Soldier serum.
8. Indigo Hulk – A powerful variant that can manipulate time and space, but is often unstable and difficult to control.
9. Psycho-Man’s Hulk – A mind-controlled version of the Hulk, who was used by the villain Psycho-Man as a weapon.
9) Grey Hulk
Initially, when The Hulk made his debut, he was grey instead of the familiar green we know today. However, this wasn’t a creative choice but rather an economical one – grey ink was less expensive at the time. This era isn’t officially recognized as the Grey Hulk period; that would come later. The Grey Hulk represents the least powerful form of The Hulk, yet it is also one of the more intelligent incarnations. During his time as the Grey Hulk, the Joe Fixit persona emerged, transforming The Hulk into a sly and cunning version of himself. Joe Fixit had ties to the mob in Las Vegas, where he wore custom-tailored suits that were imposing to anyone who encountered him.
There exists a brutal variant of the Grey Hulk, though this iteration of the character initially possesses the least amount of raw strength among all Hulks. This version has forfeited his intelligence, but remains incredibly formidable. Wolverine discovered this the hard way when he encountered the Grey Hulk in an intense battle that Wolverine believed he had won. However, the Grey Hulk’s remarkable healing abilities resurfaced, and he inflicted heavy damage upon Wolverine. Despite being weaker than other Hulks, the Grey Hulk still proved to be more powerful than most opponents he has faced.
8) Orange Hulk
In a different universe, there exists a version of the Hulk known as the Solar-Powered Hulk, who was engaged in combat with the X-Force team. This particular Hulk fought alongside Weapon Omega, an evil counterpart of Wolverine from the Age of Apocalypse comic series. Unlike the traditional Green Hulk, this Hulk draws his strength not from gamma radiation but from solar energy. It’s speculated that he was engineered by one of Weapon Omega’s scientists, either Dark Beast or Sugar Man. It is believed that his powers grew stronger in sunlight.
The solar-powered version of the Hulk, known as the Orange Hulk, appears quite intriguing, yet it seems vulnerable to exploitation compared to the gamma-powered Hulks. Nonetheless, it’s reasonable to believe that this Hulk shares the same high strength level and infinite strength potential as the Green Hulk. This aspect makes it advantageous. However, the Orange Hulk fell short against the Uncanny X-Force, suggesting a vulnerability or weakness greater than other Hulks might possess.
7) Green Hulk
The Green Hulk is often recognized, yet he ranks among the least powerful Hulks, a fact that highlights the might of his counterparts. Labeling the Green Hulk as ‘weak’ might not be entirely accurate, but his position on the list underscores their incredible power. The Green Hulk serves as a benchmark for other Hulks, boasting extraordinary strength and durability, an exceptional healing factor, the ability to absorb gamma radiation, and virtually unlimited potential for growth in strength, with his might increasing as he grows angrier. The Green Hulk can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Thanos, a fact that indicates the Mad Titan’s fear of him, which truly illustrates the formidable nature of the Green Hulk.
The most captivating aspect of the Green Hulk lies in its intellect, a facet that reveals itself in various ways. At times, the Green Hulk behaves like an immature beast yearning for solitude; at other instances, it transforms into a creature fueled solely by unbridled fury. Occasionally, Banner manages to regain control over the Green Hulk, turning him into Professor Hulk. Furthermore, there have been instances where the Green Hulk displayed intelligence comparable to that of Professor Hulk. It’s worth mentioning that the Green Hulk exhibits near-immunity to telepathic manipulation and possesses a unique ability to resurrect due to its connection with gamma radiation and the One Below All.
6) Red Hulk
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the character known as the Red Hulk first appeared in Captain America: New World, demonstrating the immense threat this version of the Hulk poses. However, contrary to his comic book counterpart, Sam Wilson managed to overpower him. Interestingly, while General Thunderbolt Ross assumed the role of the Red Hulk in both worlds, there appears to be a significant disparity in power. Unlike the Green Hulk who gains strength from anger, the Red Hulk amplifies his abilities by absorbing energy. This renders him an extremely formidable foe for many powerful heroes, since most of them rely on some form of energy. Furthermore, the Red Hulk can even absorb gamma radiation.
In the world of comic books, the Red Hulk overwhelmingly emerged victorious in most of his battles. One of his most legendary fights was against Thor. The Red Hulk dominated Thor, delivering blows and outmatching him in every encounter. However, it was eventually Hulk who managed to defeat the Red Hulk. Despite this, the Red Hulk continued to be a presence for several years, joining both the Avengers and the Thunderbolts. Furthermore, the Red Hulk paved the way for other non-Green and Grey Hulks to appear, and even gave birth to a Red She-Hulk.
5) Brown Hulk (Devil Hulk)
The Brown Hulk, also known as the Devil Hulk, is essentially an alternate manifestation of the Green Hulk within the mind of Bruce Banner. Unlike the physical transformation we see with the Green Hulk, the Devil Hulk is a psychological construct that embodies the anger, hatred, and intellect of the Hulk. This version of the Hulk is responsible for actions that Bruce Banner or simpler-minded Hulks would never perform, leading the Hulk down darker paths.
In “The Immortal Hulk,” the Devil-Hulk played a significant part, as it was primarily controlling the Hulk’s physical form throughout the series. Readers would only catch glimpses of its true form within Banner’s mind, providing an insight into the beast dwelling within the Green Hulk. The brown color has no particular explanation other than aesthetics; it simply looks impressive. Although both in essence share similarities with the regular Green Hulk, the Devil-Hulk is ranked higher due to its extreme brutality compared to the standard Green Hulk and its ability to outwit and overcome the Red Hulk.
4) Purple Hulk
During a battle with Doctor Strange, the Hulk temporarily turned purple, but there wasn’t much difference between the two versions. Later on, however, a significantly different Purple Hulk emerged, introduced after the events of “Dark Reign.” In this storyline, Norman Osborn – previously known as the Green Goblin and later a major Marvel villain who targeted Spider-Man and then sought to overthrow S.H.I.E.L.D. by using A.I.M. – was altered into the Purple Hulk after ingesting a serum derived from the Super Adaptoid. This new form granted him all the powers of the Avengers. The MCU’s “What If…?” series also featured a Purple Hulk, with Happy Hogan being the one transformed and gaining the abilities of the Avengers as well.
Currently, it’s evident that when compared to other Hulks, having all of one’s powers greatly amplifies strength. The Super Adaptoid has engaged in battles with the strongest Avengers ever, which suggests that the Purple Hulk possesses extraordinary abilities. On the battlefield, an ally with Purple Hulk powers is a formidable asset, but when it’s an adversary, it’s a sight that instills fear.
3) Silver Hulk
The Silver Hulk possesses the fundamental abilities of the Green Hulk, followed by an extraordinary enhancement. Essentially, the Silver Hulk serves as the Herald of Galactus, granting him all the powers of the Silver Surfer. The Silver Hulk can travel at velocities beyond that of light, boasts a silver armor impenetrable to most attacks, thrives in space conditions, and wields the Power Cosmic. This enhancement significantly boosts his original strength and bestows upon him an array of astonishing powers. He can manipulate any energy he comes across, utilizing immense cosmic energy. Furthermore, the Power Cosmic grants him the ability to control matter at a microscopic level, enabling him to transform objects into whatever he desires.
The Silver Hulk is an incredibly terrifying version of the Hulk. Even though the Green Hulk is already one of the strongest humans and nearly divine with the powers of a Galactus Herald, the Silver Hulk takes it to a whole new level of fearsome, making it one of the scariest characters in the Marvel Universe.
2) Blue Hulk
In the Marvel Universe, an entity known as the Enigma Force travels throughout the cosmos, choosing hosts and bestowing upon them immense cosmic abilities. These individuals transform into Captain Universe, utilizing their newfound powers to combat evil. It was eventually unveiled that the Enigma Force is essentially a sentient manifestation of the universe itself. It assumed control over a woman in a coma and assisted the Avengers during the Incursions, a catastrophic event that threatened to annihilate the multiverse. Utilizing the godlike might of the Enigma Force, it helped save the 616 universe.
The primary color of the outfit for Captain Universe is blue. When the Enigma Force possessed the Hulk, he transformed into the Blue Hulk, who embodied all the abilities of Captain Universe. This enhancement dramatically multiplied his initial strength and granted him control over the energies of the universe. The Blue Hulk is undoubtedly one of the strongest Hulks that has ever been.
* Wearing a blue costume, someone assumes the role of Captain Universe. After being taken over by the Enigma Force, the Hulk transformed into the Blue Hulk, possessing all the powers of Captain Universe. This change significantly boosted his original strength and allowed him to harness the energies of the universe. The Blue Hulk is unquestionably one of the most powerful versions of the Hulk ever created.
* As Captain Universe, the costume’s main color is blue. Once the Enigma Force controlled the Hulk, he morphed into the Blue Hulk, gaining all the powers of Captain Universe. This transformation greatly amplified his initial strength and provided him with mastery over the energies of the universe. The Blue Hulk is indisputably one of the most potent incarnations of the Hulk that has ever emerged.
1) Black Hulk (The Dark Hulk)
As a passionate film fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about the latest transformation of the legendary character, the Hulk. This time, it’s the Black or Dark Hulk, a result of the Hulk’s alliance with Doctor Strange. In one of their epic battles, Doctor Strange was up against the enigmatic entity, Shanzar, also known as the Dark Entity. Seeing his friend in trouble, the Hulk stepped in to lend a hand. However, Shanzar, sensing the Hulk’s immense power, sought to seize control over him. Remarkably, Shanzar is one of the few beings capable of actually taking charge of the Hulk, and once it did, it crafted the most formidable Hulk anyone had ever witnessed.
In a fusion of powers, this version of the Hulk drew strength from both the original Hulk and an ancient, dimensional entity possessing god-like abilities. With control over the tiniest particles in existence, he managed to breach one of Doctor Strange’s most potent spells, the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak. When faced with this formidable Hulk, even powerful sorcerers like Doctor Strange and She-Hulk struggled to free him from Shanzar’s grasp. If they had failed, the Black Hulk would have wrought havoc on Earth. However, this isn’t always the same Black Hulk; there’s another instance where it represents an aspect of Bruce Banner channeling all his rage, rather than the Dark Hulk.
