With characters and storylines from The Incredible Hulk being revived in 2025 blockbusters like Captain America: Brave New World, it’s clear that any Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) character could potentially return to the franchise. This includes those from Netflix’s Daredevil series, who are set to appear in Daredevil: Born Again and become more entwined with the official MCU storyline. It seems like there’s no end to the characters that this long-running franchise might resurrect for a modern twist on nostalgia. However, not every character from Marvel Studios’ history is guaranteed to show up in movies like Thunderbolts or Avengers: Doomsday.
Contrarily, it’s highly unlikely that at least five specific Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) characters will make another appearance in this saga anytime soon, or possibly ever. While anything can happen, for now, these five characters seem destined to be relegated to the shelf rather than significantly influencing the ongoing MCU narrative.
Claire Wise and Bennie Pollack from Item 47
Among the Marvel One-Shot short films, only “Item 47” primarily introduced and spotlighted fresh characters instead of delving deeper into established figures from the MCU such as Trevor Slattery or Peggy Carter. This short story revolves around a pair, Claire Wise (Lizzy Caplan) and Bennie Pollack (Jesse Bradford), who, utilizing a Chitauri artifact, transform into a contemporary version of Bonnie & Clyde. Although the SHIELD agent from this short, Felix Blake (Titus Welliver), resurfaced in Agents of SHIELD, it’s been more than a decade since “Item 47″‘s protagonists have made an appearance. It’s unlikely that this will change in the near future, given that SHIELD no longer exists as an organization.
Doc Samson From The Incredible Hulk
In the movie “Captain America: Brave New World,” it was made crystal clear once again that the events of “The Incredible Hulk” definitely took place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as it followed up on Samuel Sterns’ (Tim Blake Nelson) transformation into The Leader, a plot thread left hanging since the end of that film. However, one character from that movie has been lurking in the background for 17 years – Doc Samson (Ty Burrell), an ex-boyfriend of Betty Ross (Liv Tyler). So far, he hasn’t made an appearance, which makes us wonder if we’ll ever see him again, considering every other main character from “The Hulk” has returned. If his absence continues (given the reappearance of all other principal characters), it seems Doc Samson may have been written out of the storyline permanently.
Beth From The Avengers
Ashley Johnson’s character, Beth, significantly contributed to strengthening the idea that the Avengers team could make a meaningful difference in everyday lives within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She notably emphasized the importance of Captain America, who had traveled through time, in maintaining morale and saving lives. Unfortunately, the original Captain America (Steve Rogers) has since passed away. As Beth doesn’t seem to be connected to any other Avengers team members and is just an ordinary citizen, there seems to be little reason for her return in future MCU productions. Although Beth played a key role in shaping the story of The Avengers, it appears she won’t have major roles moving forward.
Gary the Cameraman From Iron Man 3
Discussing characters who show the influence superheroes have on ordinary people, there’s Gary (Adam Pally), a skilled cameraman from “Iron Man 3”. Being a devoted fan of Tony Stark, sporting a messy tattoo of his idol, Gary played a significant role in helping Stark uncover crucial information about the villains in “Iron Man 3”. He primarily served to highlight Stark’s widespread admiration among the public and didn’t seem to have any further reason for reappearance (despite generating plenty of laughs during his first appearance). Additionally, keeping Gary as a recurring character in MCU adventures could contradict the idea that he represents an ordinary individual who just happened to cross paths with Stark on a singular, memorable night.
Ian Boothby From Thor: The Dark World
In the film Thor: The Dark World, they chose to expand on the human characters that Thor interacts with on Earth, such as quirky intern Darcy (played by Kat Dennings), who was given her own assistant, Ian (Jonathan Howard). Ian’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe became quite limited once Thor: Ragnarok eliminated all of Thor’s Earth-bound friends, including his former love interest Jane Foster. Although these characters have since reappeared in the MCU through shows like WandaVision and Thor: Love and Thunder, there has been no trace or even reference to Ian. It seems that his romantic relationship with Darcy, as well as his entire MCU tenure, were brief and fleeting.
