Luigi Mangione Wears Bulletproof Vest to Court Amid Murder Case

Luigi Mangione has extra protection ahead of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson‘s murder trial.

On February 21st, the 26-year-old made his initial public outing in two months, donning a protective vest, when he stepped into a New York City courtroom.

Mangione, who was detained over the December shooting death of Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel, wore a green cable-knit sweater with a light blue collar shirt and beige trousers beneath his protective vest. His wrists and ankles were restrained.

As reported by NBC News, my heart pounded in anticipation when I learned that the judge declined my lawyer’s plea to remove the handcuffs prior to the hearing.

In New York, Mangione is being charged with state crimes related to Thompson’s death, specifically one count of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder, along with other weapons offenses. Additionally, he has been hit with four federal charges, including a charge for murder using a firearm, which could potentially lead to capital punishment if he is found guilty.

The University of Pennsylvania has pled not guilty to his charges. A trial date has not be set.

According to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, it’s claimed that Luigi Mangione is responsible for the bold, deliberate, and lethal shooting of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan. Such calculated, targeted gun violence will not be accepted or tolerated, and my office has been tirelessly working to apprehend the suspect and bring them to justice.

At present, Mangione is detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Not long ago, he made a statement via his legal representatives, thanking everyone who has reached out with their stories and expressions of support.

Brian Thompson served as CEO at UnitedHealthcare from 2021 onwards. Prior to this role, he worked for PwC and earned his Bachelor’s degree in business administration with a major in accounting from the University of Iowa in May 1997, as confirmed by Steve Schmadeke, the school’s public relations manager. Thompson was married to Paulette Thompson, though they had been living separately according to recent records viewed by TopMob News. Sadly, he was tragically shot and killed in New York on December 4, 2024 at the age of 50.

6:46 a.m. on December 4, 2024, officers from the NYPD’s Midtown North Precinct responded to an emergency call about a shooting outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel. According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, who spoke at a press conference later that morning, the officers arrived at the scene two minutes later and found gunshot wounds on the victim, identified as Thompson. Emergency Medical Services transported Thompson several blocks to Mount Sinai West where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m.

Kenny added that Thompson had come to New York City for an investor conference, and it appears the shooter had been lying in wait for several minutes before attacking Thompson as he walked towards the hotel. The suspect fired multiple shots, hitting Thompson in the back and right calf. Despite many people passing by the suspect, he seemed to be waiting for his target.

NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch also spoke at the press conference, describing the shooting as a “pre-meditated, pre-planned, targeted attack” rather than a random act of violence. She emphasized that the NYPD is fully investigating the case and will continue to work tirelessly until they identify and capture the shooter.

As an ardent fan, I’ve been closely following the details of the incident unraveled by Kenny, and here’s my take on it:

According to what Kenny shared, the gunman made his way on foot to the New York Hilton Midtown, arriving five minutes ahead of Thompson. At 6:44 a.m., as captured in a video, Thompson was seen walking alone towards the Hilton after exiting another hotel nearby, presumably for a UnitedHealth Group investors conference scheduled at 8 a.m. that day.

Interestingly, Kenny mentioned that the shooter, seemingly disregarding other pedestrians, approached Thompson from behind, fired shots, and continued walking towards him, still shooting. The gunman then escaped on foot before hopping onto an ebike and was spotted entering Central Park at Center Drive at 6:48 a.m.

In the course of the investigation, three live nine-millimeter rounds and three discharged shell casings were found. During a press briefing on Dec. 6, Kenny revealed that the words “depose,” “delay,” and “deny” were scrawled on one of the shell casings with a marker.

However, as of now, the motive behind this tragic event remains unconfirmed.

During the press briefing held on December 6th, Kenny shared that investigators possess footage of the suspect arriving at Port Authority in New York City on November 24th. He further explained that the bus, which is believed to have originated in Atlanta, made several stops along the way, so they’re unsure where exactly he boarded the bus.

After his arrival at Port Authority, the gunman hailed a cab and headed towards the vicinity of the Hilton hotel, where he stayed for approximately 30 minutes before moving to an Upper West Side hostel.

Kenny then added that on the morning of the shooting, the gunman departed from the hostel at 5:30 a.m., reached the Hilton hotel at 5:41 a.m., and spent time in the area around the hotel before visiting a nearby Starbucks where he bought a bottled water and a snack. He then returned to the hotel, and the shooting took place at 6:44 a.m.

Immediately after the incident, the gunman fled the scene. Kenny mentioned that the suspect was spotted entering Central Park at the intersection of 60th St. and Center Drive at 6:48 a.m., and exiting the park through W. 77th St. and Central Park West at 6:56 a.m. At 7:00 a.m., he added, the gunman was seen on W. 86th St without his bike. Four minutes later, the chief detective continued, the shooter hailed a cab at 86th St. and Amsterdam Avenue. Kenny said the gunman was then spotted near the George Washington Bridge at 7:30 a.m.

Kenny informed CNN on December 6th that investigators initially thought the shooter had left New York City after he was seen at Port Authority.

During a press conference on December 4, Kenny stated that the suspect was a male of lighter complexion who donned a light-brown or beige coat, a black and white mask, sneakers, and a distinctive gray backpack.

In the days following, the NYPD disclosed a sequence of images of the person they were searching for, with many pictures featuring a masked face.

On December 5, an NBC News senior law enforcement official revealed that photos without a covered face originated from surveillance footage at an Upper West Side hostel. Furthermore, two sources within law enforcement mentioned to NBC News that investigators were attempting to ascertain if the individual utilized a fake ID and cash for a hostel room.

During the December 6 briefing, Kenny explained that the suspect lowered his mask due to an interaction he had while checking in, where he reportedly engaged in casual conversation and smiled at the clerk.

Kenny also mentioned that a cellphone was found near the alley where the shooter escaped before reaching the ebike, but it’s uncertain if it belonged to the gunman. Additionally, a backpack was discovered in Central Park.

Investigators are examining all potential leads, such as Thompson’s social media and interviews with staff members and family, to advance the case. They are also collaborating with law enforcement agencies in Minnesota and Atlanta.

On December 9, the Altoona Police Department in Pennsylvania apprehended Luigi Mangione on firearm-related charges, as per NBC News reports. The charges encompass two felonies: one for forgery and another for unlicensed carrying of a firearm, in addition to three misdemeanors including tampering with records or identification, possession of tools for criminal activity, and providing false identification to law enforcement agencies.

NYPD Commissioner Tisch stated that an employee at McDonald’s identified Mangione, leading the Altoona police to be notified. When questioned about his recent travels to New York, Mangione reportedly grew silent and began shaking, as relayed by NBC News.

Tisch also referred to Mangione as a “person of interest” in connection with Thompson’s murder and discussed the ongoing efforts to locate him. She expressed gratitude towards law enforcement partners and the public for their assistance.

For over five days, the NYPD investigators scrutinized numerous hours of video footage, pursued hundreds of leads, and analyzed every piece of forensic evidence available: DNA, fingerprints, IP addresses, and much more to narrow down the search. They employed drones, canine units, scuba divers, surveillance systems, Argus cameras, and conducted aerial surveys. Detectives also went from door to door interviewing potential witnesses and employing traditional detective work alongside advanced technology, ultimately resulting in Mangione’s apprehension.

In my recent investigation, I uncovered some troubling findings about an individual. Not only did this person behave in a manner that raised suspicions, but they were found carrying multiple fake IDs, including one from the U.S., as well as a U.S. passport.

Upon closer examination, officers discovered a firearm and a suppressor on their person, which align with the weapon used in the murder. Furthermore, they recovered clothing items, such as a mask, similar to those worn by our suspect.

In the course of this investigation, officers also found a fraudulent New Jersey ID that matched the one used by this individual to check into the hostel in New York before the shooting incident.

Additionally, they uncovered a handwritten document providing insights into both his motivations and mental state.

On December 9th, NBC News obtained court documents showing that Manhattan prosecutors have accused Mangione of murder. Additionally, he is facing three weapon-related charges: two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a loaded firearm and one count of third-degree possession for items like a silencer. Lastly, there’s a charge related to possessing a forged instrument. At this point, Mangione has not yet pleaded guilty or not guilty regarding any of the charges.

As reported by NBC News, supported by statements from NYPD officials, Mangione was found with a three-page document containing approximately 300 words when he was apprehended. This document contained phrases such as “Frankly these parasites had it coming,” according to senior law enforcement sources.

In the document, it was stated that Mangione acted independently, although officials have not definitively ruled out potential involvement from others at this stage. The writings also included a statement addressed to federal authorities, expressing respect for their role in the country but stating that the investigation could be expedited since Mangione claimed he wasn’t working with anyone else.

Furthermore, Mangione allegedly expressed remorse for any distress or trauma caused, while acknowledging it was necessary. However, his exact motivation remains unconfirmed, as noted by Tisch in a Dec 10 interview on Today. She stated that the document revealed anti-corporatist sentiment and concerns about the healthcare industry, but the specific motive will be clarified as the investigation progresses over the following weeks and months.

On December 10th, Mangione was present at a hearing held at the courthouse in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, which was reported by NBC News. Upon his arrival, he expressed to families present that the proceedings were out of touch and an affront to the intelligence of the American public.

Upon this hearing, Mangione did not waive extradition to New York and was subsequently denied bail. Consequently, he will continue to be held in Pennsylvania’s SCI Huntingdon prison.

His legal representative, Thomas Dickey, addressed reporters stating that Mangione intends to plead not guilty in both Pennsylvania and New York.

Dickey added that there is currently no evidence implicating Mangione as the shooter. He emphasized the importance of the principle of American justice, which includes the presumption of innocence until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Additionally, Brian’s wife, Paulette, spoke of the threats her husband had received before his death, stating: “Yes, there were some threats. To be honest, I don’t know the details. All I know is that he mentioned people had been threatening him.
