Sony’s endeavors in PC gaming during recent years have shown a blend of success and failure. On one hand, hit games such as “Helldivers 2”, “Horizon Zero Dawn”, and “Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut” have boosted the company significantly. However, there have also been disappointing debuts. Yet, despite these occasional setbacks, Shuhei Yoshida, former president of SIE Worldwide Studios who recently parted ways with the company, believes that the rewards are worth pursuing.
In an episode of the Sacred Symbols podcast (as transcribed by Eurogamer), Yoshida explained that launching games on PC serves several purposes: it broadens the player base by catering to individuals who don’t own consoles, particularly in areas where console usage isn’t prevalent. The strategy is to attract these new players to a particular series, and when a new installment of that franchise arrives, they might be persuaded to buy a PlayStation.
They additionally generate extra revenue by transferring existing games to PC because it’s less expensive than making a brand new game. This is similar to printing money, which allows us to fund new projects since the cost of creating games has risen significantly, especially for PlayStation Studios as seen in titles like “Horizon Forbidden West”, “The Last of Us Part 2”, and the upcoming “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2”. This becomes even more crucial given the increasing budgets for these projects.
Yoshida pointed out that this approach enables PlayStation games to penetrate markets such as China, which are predominantly focused on PC games. He stated, “China is a vast market for PC games, and though the console market in China is growing, it’s still relatively small. To tap into audiences in countries like China, it’s essential to offer games on PC. Therefore, I firmly believe that PC versions extend our reach to a new demographic.
Sony’s upcoming PC adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2, dubbed as The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, is set to release on April 3rd. This is an improved edition of the highly praised PS4 game that originally came out for the PS5 in 2024. It encompasses the main game, along with fresh features such as roguelike No Return and Speedrun modes, Guitar Free Play, three additional levels known as Lost Levels, and commentary on cutscenes for your listening pleasure.
