Although most theme park enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the grand opening of Universal Epic Universe in Orlando on May 22, 2025, Universal has been stealthily developing another massive project overseas. The long-awaited expansion of Universal Studios Great Britain is now on the verge of receiving final approval, promising a thrilling new destination for UK residents.
In the year 2023, Universal officially purchased approximately 480 acres of land to its south, which is around 60 miles from London. Although Universal hasn’t disclosed specific details about the attractions for this park, hints suggest that the hit Broadway musical “Wicked” and its upcoming release “Wicked: For Good” in November 2025 may indicate that characters and stories from Oz could be featured prominently within the new park.
In simpler terms, Universal Destinations & Experiences CEO Mark Woodbury expressed a similar idea by saying, “Seeing the play Wicked made me think, ‘This would make an amazing theme park!’
Universal, similar to Disney’s approach for DisneylandForward, collaborated closely with local government entities and nearby communities to ensure all their concerns were properly addressed. Notably, six key leaders from these local authorities have shown great enthusiasm for this project, even going as far as writing a letter to the Prime Minister emphasizing its significant advantages. Some of these benefits include the generation of approximately 20,000 jobs during construction and an additional 20,000 positions for the resort’s operation.
The final step we’re waiting for is the approval from the Treasury, as they are required to endorse our financial plans. Our ambitious project encompasses a four-zone park, a 500-room hotel, a newly constructed train station, two transit hubs, and a dining and shopping district similar to CityWalk, which can be accessed even without a park ticket.
parliamentarian Chris Curtis described the initiative as a “rare chance for Britain in this generation,” underlining his persistent dedication to ensuring its realization.
After receiving the go-ahead, it’s projected that the construction of Universal Great Britain will take approximately six years. For reference, Universal Epic Universe, which encompasses a similar 480-acre area, was announced in 2019 and is scheduled to open in 2025, despite experiencing some construction delays.
One captivating feature of Universal Great Britain’s position is its close proximity to Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter, approximately 40 miles distant. With the widespread appeal of Wizarding World lands at other Universal parks, it seems quite plausible that a Harry Potter-themed attraction will be included in the UK park’s offerings.
If Universal decides to rebuild iconic spots like Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, or introduce fresh adventures such as the forthcoming Ministry of Magic expansion at Epic Universe, the range of options is vast.
Should it be granted, Universal Studios Great Britain would mark a significant expansion to the United Kingdom’s entertainment and tourist industry. Boasting immersive attractions, extensive resort facilities, and robust community backing, this park is primed to emerge as an essential stop for both local residents and global tourists.
