The Future of Ethereum: 80% by 2025 😜
Ethereum’s layer-2 ecosystem is a bit like a crowded ballroom, with everyone vying for attention. But, Optimism, the life of the party 💃, has managed to gather quite a crowd. Their Superchain collective has become the place to be, attracting developers from giants like Coinbase, Kraken, and even Sony 🤯.
Ryan Wyatt, Optimism’s chief growth officer, told CryptoMoon that Superchain is already handling 60% of Ethereum’s layer-2 transactions. He expects that number to balloon to 80% by the end of the year. Talk about ambitious! With over $4 billion locked up and 11.5 million daily transactions, Superchain is making some serious noise. 📈
But what exactly is Superchain? It’s basically a team of layer-2 networks all powered by Optimism’s OP Stack. Think of it like a collaborative effort to scale Ethereum, with everyone contributing to the success of the whole.
“Every chain in the Superchain helps create a flywheel effect by contributing revenue back to the Optimism Collective, participating in governance, and supporting core development of the OP Stack,” says Wyatt. It’s a beautiful circle of growth, wouldn’t you say?
And it’s not just Superchain that’s booming. Ethereum layer-2s as a whole have seen a surge in activity. Last December, they were holding a whopping $55.5 billion in value. 🚀
With interoperability upgrades on the horizon, things are only going to get more exciting. Mallesh Pai, research director at Consensys (the folks behind MetaMask), told CryptoMoon Magazine that we can expect to see cross-chain swaps on L2s this year. Get ready for some serious DeFi action!
L2s and DeFi: A Match Made in Heaven
While Ethereum’s price has taken a bit of a tumble since the Merge, its DeFi scene remains thriving. And layer-2s are playing a major role in this continued success. They’re scaling up DeFi capabilities and attracting even more activity to the Ethereum ecosystem. Finematics, a DeFi educator, told CryptoMoon Magazine, “In the Ethereum ecosystem, we expect DeFi activities to continue moving into L2s. These new networks will continue to play a pivotal role, enhancing Ethereum’s capabilities and allowing for greater transaction throughput.”
Stablecoins are flocking to layer-2s, too. By December, Ethereum layer-2s were holding a whopping $13.5 billion worth of these assets. That’s more than BNB Smart Chain, Solana, and Avalanche combined! 🤑
So, there you have it.
