Actor Wilson Bethel reprises his role as Bullseye in the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again,” aiming to surpass the level of villainous madness shown by Colin Farrell during his portrayal. During an interview at the red carpet premiere, Bethel described Bullseye as someone who can become extremely unstable. He added that playing a masked character like Bullseye adds an extra layer of difficulty to conveying the character’s insanity. When directly asked if he might outdo Farrell’s performance as Bullseye, Bethel stated, “I’d certainly like to, let’s put it that way. My goal in life is to outdo Colin Farrell in terms of portraying madness.
Bethel’s portrayal of Bullseye’s volatile character is crucial to his role in the upcoming revival of Daredevil: Born Again, sparking curiosity about his comeback after a gap of four years since his last appearance on Netflix’s Daredevil (2018). Previously, Farrell played Bullseye in the 2003 film version of Daredevil, alongside future Batman Ben Affleck. While Farrell’s portrayal of Bullseye was quite theatrical and over-the-top, his interpretation of the Penguin has become one of his most iconic roles.
In the third season of ‘Daredevil’, the character Bullseye is depicted as a corrupt FBI agent named Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter, who is covertly employed by Wilson Fisk, also known as the Kingpin (played by Vincent D’Onofrio). Daredevil, played by Charlie Cox, becomes their target. Dex assumes a red suit similar to Daredevil’s with horns, employing his unique ability to turn everyday objects into projectile weapons against Daredevil, who is nicknamed The Man Without Fear. In the end, Fisk and Bullseye betray each other, resulting in a severe spinal injury for Dex. However, the final scene of ‘Daredevil’ season 3 suggests that Dex will return as the genuine Bullseye and may acquire the metallically-enhanced spinal column from the comics, which could potentially be Adamantium, following its introduction in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’.
In the third season of Daredevil, we saw the character Dex from Bullseye depicted as a deeply troubled individual, also feared for his exceptional skill in throwing objects with the precision and lethality of a ninja. With Daredevil: Born Again essentially functioning as season 4, it’s expected that hints about Dex’s return as Bullseye will significantly influence his character on the series. Actor Wilson Bethel intends to push the boundaries further by portraying Dex as a more ruthless and violent version compared to Colin Farrell’s interpretation.
In Vincent D’Onofrio’s depiction of Kingpin as an erratic, extremely aggressive character, Bethel’s comment about competing with Colin Farrell’s Bullseye suggests that Matt Murdock will face some incredibly volatile adversaries in “Daredevil: Born Again.” Given that Bullseye also has two formidable foes, not only Daredevil but also the Kingpin, he appears to be a significant wild card for the series. As The Man Without Fear prepares to make his comeback, fans eagerly anticipate Bethel’s return as Bullseye, hoping it will recreate the same indelible impression as his portrayal in “Daredevil” season 3, and also match Colin Farrell’s stunningly deranged interpretation of the Marvel antagonist.
On March 4th, the series “Daredevil: Reborn” will debut on Disney+, and you can stream all three seasons of “Marvel’s Daredevil” on the platform as well.
