Split Fiction – Everything You Need to Know

Having garnered affection with modern classics such as “A Way Out” and “It Takes Two,” Josef Fares’ Hazelight Studios has built up a substantial positive reputation, and anticipation for their upcoming project is growing steadily. Recently, “Split Fiction” was officially revealed, but this cooperative game is almost here, with excitement mounting as the launch date nears. To help prepare ourselves (and hopefully you) for the imminent release of “Split Fiction,” we’ll be discussing some essential facts about the game in this article.

STORY

As a devoted admirer, I’m eagerly anticipating my journey as Zoe and Mio, two gifted authors, stepping into the headquarters of Rader Publishing at game onset. However, the atmosphere here is more ominous than expected, and we’re unwittingly pulled into replicas of each other’s fictitious realms. Meanwhile, Rader covertly plots to pilfer our creative ideas. Now, Zoe and I must join forces to thwart their schemes and devise a strategy to return to the authenticity of reality.

LEADING DUO

Zoe and Mio may share the profession of writing, but they’re distinctly different individuals. Zoe, portrayed by Elsie Bennet, is a fantasy writer and is known for her bubbly, optimistic, and outgoing personality. In contrast, we have Mio, played by Kaja Chan, who is a more reserved, introverted, and practical realistic author. The development of their relationship, including learning to trust one another, will be a significant aspect of the narrative.

LEVELS

Hazelight Studios has earned its esteemed status through exceptional gameplay and diverse level designs, and they’re carrying on this tradition with the upcoming title, Split Fiction. In this game, the levels are based on the fictional worlds of characters Mio and Zoe. Players can expect to traverse a wide range of environments as a result. Mio, an expert in sci-fi, will provide stages set in cyberpunk cities and outer space, while Zoe’s passion for fantasy will offer opportunities to explore various magical realms, ride on dragons, and much more.

GAMEPLAY DETAILS

In essence, “Split Fiction” is marketed as an action-packed journey that blends combat, platform navigation, and puzzle-solving, akin to the gameplay style of “It Takes Two”. However, unlike its predecessor, it aims to maintain interest by introducing significant new mechanics with every level. Let me also add, for clarity, that these fresh mechanics will be key features throughout the gameplay experience.

ABILITIES

In the game “Split Fiction”, moving up to each new level not only transports players to a fresh world but also introduces unique central skills for both characters, Mio and Zoe. These skills, which range from combat maneuvers to navigational tricks to solving intricate puzzles, will be essential for everything from jumping around as a cyberpunk ninja to transforming into fairies. The creators at Hazelight Studios ensure that cooperative play remains the focus throughout the game, implying that Zoe and Mio must work together by combining their abilities to overcome unique obstacles.

SIDE STORIES

In “Split Fiction,” your journey is primarily progressive, yet filled with detours as you advance. You’ll encounter optional content strategically placed throughout the game, which includes intriguing side stories. These stories can be accessed via portals – peculiarities created by the simulation where Zoe and Mio are trapped to snatch their unfinished creative thoughts. Each side story introduces fresh locations, gameplay elements, and narrative fragments.

MORE ON SIDE STORIES

In the spirit of Hazelight Studios’ usual approach, diversity is key in Split Fiction, as we’ve previously discussed. This diversity will extend to its side stories too. Originally conceived by Zoe and Mio during their childhoods, these unfinished tales and their settings are described by Hazelight as “remarkably peculiar, captivating, and chaotic”. Within these optional stages, players can anticipate scaling a mountain teeming with giants, skiing down a fiery mountain slope, traversing outer space, pursuing foes while water skiing, and even transforming into pigs, only to be transformed into sausages later on.

CO-OP OPTIONS

Similar to their past games, Hazelight Studios offers players two methods to enjoy “Split Fiction”. For those who prefer playing together in person, a local co-op mode is included, as the studio has consistently emphasized this as the ideal way to experience their games. For those who wish to play online, that option will also be accessible.

FRIEND’S PASS

Hazelight Studios and publisher EA plan to provide a Friend’s Pass for not only games like A Way Out and It Takes Two but also for their upcoming title Split Fiction. To put it simply, a Friend’s Pass enables two players to enjoy the game using just one purchased copy.

CROSS-PLAY

Split Fiction is excited to announce a significant upgrade with their Friend’s Pass, which offers full cross-play compatibility. Unlike games such as It Takes Two and A Way Out, which only permitted players to collaborate with others on the same platform (with It Takes Two‘s cross-generation play being an exception), Split Fiction allows gamers on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms to team up freely without any barriers.

PC REQUIREMENTS

Players planning to enjoy the PC version of Split Fiction likely won’t encounter many problems due to its generally low system requirements. To play on minimum settings (for a smooth 1080p and 60 FPS experience), you’ll require either an i5-6600K or Ryzen 5 2600X CPU, paired with either a GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon RX 470 graphics card. For recommended settings (to run the game at 1440p and 60 FPS), you’ll need an i7-11700k or Ryzen 7 5800X CPU, along with a GeForce RTX 3070 or Radeon 6700 XT graphics card. Regardless of the setting, ensure you have 16 GB of RAM and 85 GB of free storage space available.

STEAM DECK COMPATIBLE

Players eager to enjoy the portable version of “Split Fiction” can look forward to doing so as EA and Hazelight have stated on the game’s official FAQ page that it will be compatible with Steam Deck upon release. However, it’s not clear at this point if the game will receive full optimization with the Verified tag or not.

POTENTIAL SWITCH 2 RELEASE?

Will “Split Fiction” follow in the footsteps of games like “It Takes Two” and potentially make its way to the Nintendo Switch? Since it’s not even releasing for PS4 and Xbox One, it seems unlikely that it will come to the current version of the Switch. However, director Josef Fares hinted at possible collaboration with the rumored Switch 2 console, suggesting that Hazelight might have been working on something related to the upcoming console behind-the-scenes. Fares mentioned, “I know a lot about [Switch 2], but there’s a lot of secrecy surrounding it, so I can’t say anything yet, but you will all find out soon.” We hope that this means an announcement for a Switch 2 version of the game is imminent, possibly during the Nintendo Direct scheduled on April 2.

CONSOLE FRAME RATE AND RESOLUTION TARGETS

According to the Xbox store listing for Split Fiction‘s game, it offers native 4K resolution at 60 frames per second (FPS) or higher on the Xbox Series X, suggesting that the same (or similar) performance may be expected on the PS5. However, it remains unclear if the game will provide multiple graphics modes, and we don’t have details yet about its resolution and frame rate targets for the PS5 Pro or Xbox Series S.

PRICE

The starting price of Split Fiction is set at $49.99 across all platforms, which is slightly more expensive than It Takes Two ($39.99) and A Way Out ($29.99) when they initially hit the market. However, it’s important to note that the former comes with a Friend’s Pass, as previously mentioned.
