Despite the recent success of the “Twisted Metal” streaming series on Peacock, it’s been quite a while since PlayStation released a game connected to this franchise. However, rumors suggested that Firesprite Studios, who have previously worked on “Horizon: Call of the Mountain,” were developing a new PS5 installment in the series. Although PlayStation never officially confirmed the project, whispers about Firesprite’s involvement started surfacing online in 2022. Unfortunately, it appears that this game was allegedly cancelled last year, but we now have some fresh information thanks to Hugo Silva, a lead UI programmer who was apparently part of the new Twisted Metal team.
On Silva’s personal website, as reported by Insider Gaming, Firesprite unveiled some images and information about “Project Copper,” a game they developed that wasn’t explicitly named as Twisted Metal. However, since it is known that Firesprite was working on the series, and given Silva’s description, it appears likely that this would have been a new installment of Twisted Metal. The developer describes Project Copper as a third-person vehicular combat game set in an established PlayStation IP, which strongly suggests it could be Twisted Metal.
In a surprising twist, as per Silva’s claims, Firesprite and PlayStation were planning to transform Twisted Metal into a battle royale game. The game would feature third-person shooting mechanics along with vehicle combat, where the ultimate goal is survival. On Silva’s website, you can find a few images from the game, all marked as confidential due to non-disclosure agreements (NDA). Although the vehicles are visible, these images emphasize the battle royale aspect, showing unidentified characters exchanging fire. These character models appear to be temporary, likely to be swapped with iconic figures from the series later on. Alternatively, players might have had the option to design their own protagonist, but this remains uncertain.
It’s been over a decade since the last installment of Twisted Metal was released on PS3, and fans have been eagerly waiting for a new entry in the series ever since. With a Twisted Metal show now available, it seems like a significant missed opportunity for PlayStation not to release a game for viewers to play after watching the show, as this could greatly enhance fan engagement.
Although Firesprite’s version of Twisted Metal was apparently scrapped, it may turn out to be a fortunate move. Judging from the information that has been disclosed so far, the game might not have lived up to the high standards set by previous installments in the series. If this new Twisted Metal had been launched and flopped, it could have set back the franchise for another ten years or more. However, PlayStation co-CEO Herman Hurst hinted in December that the company is exploring ways to utilize its older intellectual properties, giving us reason to believe that dormant franchises like Twisted Metal may make a comeback. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait too long before a fresh game arrives.
