Kieran Culkin’s Oscars Moment: What He Really Said to Jeremy Strong!

You can take the boy out of Succession but you can’t always take the Succession out of the boy.

2025 saw Kieran Culkin, winner of Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars, not only announce another pregnancy with wife Jazz Charton but also honor his former TV brother Jeremy Strong. This was in recognition of Strong’s chilling portrayal of Donald Trump’s mentor Roy Cohn in The Apprentice, for which they were both nominated in the same category. (Here are all the winners from the 97th Academy Awards.)

Though in signature Roman Roy fashion, most of Culkin’s compliment had to be bleeped.

As a diehard fan, let me tell you straight up, Jeremy, your performances on The Apprentice are nothing short of extraordinary! Just heard Robert Downey Jr. express the same sentiment regarding your acting skills. Man, I’ve got to say, your work is absolutely fantastic!

So the hand over the mouth was a little late.

In the context of an ‘oops’ situation, Culkin commented, “I shouldn’t be picking out individuals, as it can appear to be favoritism, but you truly excelled.

True to Kendall Roy’s style, Strong offered a subtle, heartfelt smirk instead of laughter while Culkin gracefully tripped over his words, as he is known to do, when receiving a significant award.

He went on to say, “The words I had prepared are gone now, maybe about twenty seconds worth. I can’t explain how I ended up here, it feels like something I’ve always been doing. It’s just been a part of who I am. This wasn’t the path I thought I’d take, but somehow, I find myself here. What I do know is that Emily Gerson Saines, my manager of 30 years, is crucial to me. Thank you for being there, I rely on you for everything. So please, don’t leave, because without you, I’d be utterly lost. I appreciate you deeply.

Additionally, Culkin expressed gratitude towards Jesse Eisenberg, both writer-director-star of the film “A Real Pain”, for creating the movie that earned him his initial Oscar nomination and win. He remarked, “You’re a genius.”, adding humorously, “I wouldn’t say that to your face, I won’t say it again, so savor it.

Besides Strong, Culkin outperformed Anora’s Yura Borisov, The Brutalist’s Guy Pearce, and A Complete Unknown’s Edward Norton in the competition.
