As the premiere of the new Star Trek series, Starfleet Academy, approaches in just a few days, Paramount has been ramping up its promotional efforts. The teasers and clips released so far suggest a mix of familiar elements and a look towards the future. However, as is often the case with Star Trek fans, the nostalgic aspects seem to be generating the most excitement.
Recent Star Trek shows are making an effort to connect with the franchise’s history, and as Starfleet Academy continues to play a role in future storylines, this feels increasingly important – and difficult. Thankfully, we’ve seen subtle nods to the past, like references to Wesley Crusher and Harry Kim’s career advancement. A new clip released this week offered another throwback, bringing back the Mugato creature from the original Star Trek series.
The horned ape creature, similar to a Yeti, was first seen in Season 2 of the original Star Trek series, in the episode “A Private Little War.” It didn’t appear again in live-action until Star Trek: Lower Decks, in the episode “Mugato, Gumato.” This was a surprising appearance, considering how rarely this alien race has been featured, but it shows that Starfleet Academy is committed to honoring Star Trek‘s history, even through unusual cameos.
Why The Mugato Are Back in Starfleet Academy

The central question is whether the creature we’re seeing is actually a Mugato, and if it’s the same one from Starfleet Academy’s past. A key clue is that this Mugato is shown playfully high-fiving a student – a far cry from the aggressive creature that fought Captain Kirk years ago.
The video seems to show someone in a costume, especially since it appears while someone is asking about parties. It’s much more probable that the ‘Mugato’ is a lesson or reference to past events – possibly inspired by Captain Kirk’s experiences, considering the show often highlights the accomplishments of legendary officers. It’s unlikely to be a genuine, evolved creature. Probably not, at least.
