Final Fantasy 7 Remake Trilogy Includes Spin-off Characters to “Bring a Fresh Feel,” Says Director

With fans eagerly awaiting Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 – currently known by two potential titles and with an internal release date already set – it’s interesting to consider the challenges the development team faced with such a large project. They didn’t just need to recreate the story of the original Final Fantasy 7, but also incorporate elements from its spin-off games, aiming for a revitalized experience, as director Naoki Hamaguchi explained.

In a recent interview with GamerBraves, he explained that the team, including creative director Tetsuya Nomura and producer Yoshinori Kitase, didn’t just want to recreate the original game. They aimed to craft a story that incorporates elements from the spin-off titles and the overall spirit of the Final Fantasy 7 universe, giving the entire experience a modern and revitalized feel.

It’s not enough to just add these characters’ stories – you have to consider how they fit into the existing world, especially since they weren’t in the original game. After all, many fans haven’t played the spin-off titles – and considering games like Dirge of Cerberus, it’s easy to see why – so their stories need to be accessible to everyone.

Hamaguchi explained that when creating this collection of new stories building on the original Final Fantasy 7, the team struggled with how much to reveal for players unfamiliar with the characters introduced in the spin-off games.

When figuring out how much content we could realistically fit into the game, we had to think about the overall length. We also looked at how many spin-offs and extra features the Final Fantasy series already has, especially those with beloved characters, and decided how much new content would give players of the remake a truly exciting and revitalized experience.

While some changes in Final Fantasy 7 Remake have been divisive, it’s undeniably been an exciting journey for players, and everyone is excited to see what happens next in the series.

When will Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 (or whatever the final title is) come out? It’s hard to say for sure, but Square Enix has shared some encouraging updates. Last October, a producer mentioned the project was progressing well and becoming very satisfying. More recently, they stated the main gameplay is finished and is finally aligning with their original vision. This next installment promises a fresh and larger-scale experience, with the Highwind airship playing a central role.
