Alien: Earth Outshines Most Disney+ Star Wars Shows

Hulu’s Alien: Earth successfully adapted the classic sci-fi series for television, a feat many of the Star Wars shows on Disney+ haven’t managed. While Star Wars occasionally produces a good series, like the enjoyable Skeleton Crew, these successes are becoming less frequent.

Following successful collaborations with creators like Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni on Star Wars shows, Disney tapped Noah Hawley, known for Fargo and Legion, to develop the first Alien television series. With Ridley Scott’s blessing, Alien: Earth brought the terrifying xenomorphs to Earth for the very first time.

Alien: Earth Is A Better Sci-Fi Show Than Most Disney+ Star Wars Series

If you’re looking for pure science fiction, Alien: Earth is more enjoyable than many of the Star Wars series currently on Disney+. Shows like Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett aim to recreate the adventurous spirit of the classic space serials that originally inspired George Lucas—think Flash Gordon—but they’ve ended up being fairly average and blending together.

The show Alien: Earth explores thought-provoking possibilities about the future. It asks questions like: What if giant companies controlled everything? And what if a sick child’s mind could be put into a robot body?

What Star Wars Shows Can Learn From Alien: Earth

I’ll admit, the idea of transferring the minds of children facing death into adult bodies felt a bit unsettling. However, it was a completely new direction for the Alien series, and honestly, something I hadn’t seen explored in science fiction before. Whether you love it or hate it, it’s undeniably original.

The future of Star Wars depends on fresh, original stories. Simply revisiting familiar characters and moments from past films and shows isn’t a good long-term strategy for building a successful cinematic universe. Instead, Star Wars should prioritize inventive concepts like Skeleton Crew – a fun, Gooniesinspired pirate adventure – over retreading old ground with projects like Obi-Wan Kenobi*, which focused on a well-known character’s backstory.

Star Wars’ Best Live-Action Show Has Something In Common With Alien: Earth

As a huge cinema fan, I honestly think Andor is the best live-action Star Wars show ever, and it’s right up there with the greatest TV shows of all time. While Alien: Earth isn’t quite on that level, both shows share something really important. They both have a very strong, distinct vision – Andor thanks to Tony Gilroy, and Alien: Earth with Noah Hawley at the helm. What’s amazing is that neither feels like just another piece of franchise filler; they both feel like genuine passion projects, made by people who truly care.

I truly believe Gilroy had a story about rebellion against a powerful, oppressive force to tell, Star Wars or not. And Hawley? He’s fascinated by the line between humans and artificial beings, regardless of the Alien franchise. Honestly, I think Star Wars could really benefit from taking a page out of Alien: Earth’s playbook.
