Changes on a large scale are brewing with Nintendo, particularly in relation to their reward systems, as they gear up for the unveiling of their upcoming video game console – the Nintendo Switch 2 – which is slated for launch towards the end of this year.
On the other hand, elements that may soon become obsolete include the My Nintendo Gold Points system and the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers.
That means gamers will need to fork over a little more dough until the replacement rolls out.
The Nintendo rewards system debuted together with the mobile app Miitomo in 2016. After two years, points amassed through this program became redeemable for purchasing complete Nintendo Switch video games.
For every dollar you spend on select digital content, you receive Gold Points equal to 5 cents. These points can be redeemed towards the purchase of downloadable software and additional content (DLC) for the Nintendo Switch system.
Starting from March 24, 2025, at 9:30 PM Pacific Daylight Time, Nintendo will cease the accumulation of Gold Points for digital content. Therefore, gaming enthusiasts should consider making their final purchases within approximately one month before this date.
For individuals who choose physical games, they benefit from additional time as games launched before March 24th can still earn Gold Points for redemption within a year of their release. Additionally, Nintendo confirmed that pre-orders made prior to this date will be honored and purchases at the Nintendo New York store will continue to accrue Gold Points until the service’s closure on March 24th.
Instead of attributing the shift in Nintendo’s approach to the gaming industry’s economic difficulties and job cuts, it appears that they are transitioning due to the passage of eras.
The Nintendo system I own is older than the Nintendo Switch, as it was released while the Wii U was still available. Given that the service has been around for nearly a decade, it’s understandable that the company would be introducing a fresh offering along with their upcoming console.
A fresh wave of speculation about upcoming initiatives arises from the news that the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers program will not continue with the launch of Nintendo Switch 2. This program provided discounted bundles on Nintendo games. It seems Nintendo is moving towards an undisclosed new initiative, leaving fans curious about what services and programs they might utilize over the next ten years.
