The comeback of JSA has proven rewarding for DC comic enthusiasts. JSA, one of DC’s most esteemed team books from the late 90s and early 2000s, brought back the Justice Society of America to a fresh audience. With DC committed to revitalizing their classic universe, and DC’s New Golden Age having restored that particular section, it was fitting for this series to make its return, under the guidance of writer Jeff Lemire and artist Diego Orlotegui. The book has once more claimed its spot among the top team books currently available, as the Injustice Society’s complex strategy has caused a rift within the JSA; the older members are trapped in Hell, while the younger members remain on Earth, seemingly following the tune that the Injustice Society is orchestrating.
However, the Injustice Society conceals a crucial secret, which complicates matters for the Earthbound Society. One formidable adversary of the Justice Society, Johnny Sorrow, has crippled the JSA by impersonating Obsidian and creating discord within the team. Obsidian, son of Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern, is an ideal choice for a villain to infiltrate, as he’s exactly the kind of person who could cause such chaos. Sorrow manipulates Obsidian into tearing the team apart, and regrettably, it seems plausible that he would do so.
Obsidian Has Had a Difficult Life
Obsidian and his sibling Jade are the offspring of villain Thorn (who had a condition called Dissociative Identity Disorder) and Alan Scott. Thorn, who had two personalities – Rose Canton and Thorn, gave up Obsidian and Jade at birth and they were placed in foster care. Growing up in an abusive environment left Obsidian deeply scarred. Later, the pair were taken in by Alan Scott and joined Infinity, Inc. Obsidian possessed powers that enabled him to manipulate shadows and travel to a shadowy realm called Shadowlands. Due to his past trauma, he developed a stubborn and aggressive personality, which grew even more turbulent when he was taken over by the sorcerer Ian Karkull. The Justice Society eventually managed to free Obsidian, but he proved quite susceptible to corruption.
In the captivating tale “Princes of Darkness” from the JSA series, I was lured by the nefarious duo, Eclipso and Mordru, offering me an opportunity to harness my shadow powers for their sinister plans. The love of my father and sister saved me from succumbing to despair and evil, leading me down a path of righteousness ever since. I’ve come out as gay to my beloved family and friends, and they’ve stood by me every step of the way.
When Sorrow chose me as his successor, he couldn’t have made a better pick. I’ve always been more aggressive than other team members, and in the first five issues of JSA, this has become even more apparent. It might be hard for my teammates to see the villain in me, but my relentless pursuit of justice against evil is just who I am.
As Obsidian, Sorrow has cleverly manipulated events, pitting members of the JSA against each other and causing tension within our ranks. In JSA #5, we find him orchestrating a battle that the team stands little chance of winning. But fear not, for I am determined to protect those I care about at all costs.
The Justice Society Has Been Pulled into the Web of a Master Manipulator in the Guise of a Friend
The Justice Society, comic’s oldest supergroup, has historically tackled the most formidable challenges within the DC Multiverse. Their composition is unique, blending surviving heroes from the Golden Age such as Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, Hawkman, and Hawkgirl, with newer heroes who have inherited the legacies of their deceased or retired counterparts. This blend often prevents rash actions, as the older members usually keep a check on the younger ones. However, the Injustice Society anticipated this, strategically splitting the Justice Society into two factions. The tactic of divide and conquer is effective, and exploiting Obsidian to serve as the Injustice Society’s pawn has caused chaos among the group, much like Sorrow intended.
As a movie buff, I’ve noticed that the Justice Society Alliance (JSA) tends to unfairly blame Obsidian for their problems. His mysterious past and the dark powers he wields often lead them to give him more leeway than necessary. However, this leniency is precisely what’s causing trouble within the team right now. You see, they’re not nearly as unified as they should be, and I believe Johnny Sorrow is cleverly exploiting his position with Obsidian to sow discord among the JSA members.
