A Comprehensive Guide to the Guardians of Monster Hunter Wilds: Their Origins, Powers, Connections to the Keepers, and Beyond
In Monster Hunter Wilds, the Guardians could take some by surprise as they’re a mystery, even for seasoned players. Although they’re officially new monster species, they bear a striking resemblance to monsters featured in previous series installments.
In the game, not only are the Guardians crucial to the main narrative, but they are also linked with the Keepers. However, during the initial meeting between Keepers in the Ruins of Wyveria, the game fails to provide a clear explanation about the role of Guardians. There are still many questions that remain unanswered, such as: What was the true purpose of the Guardians in Wyveria? Who constructed these structures called Constructs, and what was their intention behind it?
In the conclusion of the Low Rank main storyline, players may have wondered about the subject of Guardians. Regrettably, this theme is abandoned in High Rank due to the emergence of the Frenzy Virus. However, there are subtle indications within the game that can assist us in understanding the real identity of the Guardians. Here’s a rundown of what you should know about the Guardians in Monster Hunter Rise.
What Are the Guardians in Monster Hunter Wilds?
Guardians belong to the category called ‘Constructs’. These aren’t ordinary creatures; they are artificially made monsters that resemble known species. Unlike their natural counterparts, Guardians don’t need to eat or reproduce. They live indefinitely as long as they keep consuming a substance called Wylk.
Since Wylk is abundant in the Ruins of Wyveria, the Guardians are primarily found in that specific area. In Monster Hunter Wilds, we found indications that Guardians existed for both living and extinct species. The Guardian Rathalos, Guardian Doshaguma, Guardian Fulgar Anjanath, and Guardian Ebony Odogaron are all artificial creatures derived from existing species.
Interestingly, among them, there’s an exception – Arkveld, the Guardian, that originates from an ancient, now-extinct species. Similarly, Zoh Shia, another Guardian, isn’t modeled after any known monster. Instead, Zoh Shia represents an endeavor to construct an “Equal Dragon Weapon,” matching the might of the Elder Dragons like Fatalis. Despite their original purpose as servants for Wyveria’s people, these Guardians ultimately led to the downfall of their civilization.
This, combined with Arkveld’s response, implies that Guardians, though artificially created, possess something akin to “free will,” though it is heavily controlled. These beings have an inherent desire to survive and often strive to emulate the characteristics of their organic counterparts.
In the game, Arkveld the Guardian was observed killing and eating other monsters as a means to survive, even though it’s a Construct. This behavior underscores that Guardians have an instinct for self-preservation. Similarly, Guardian Ebony Odogaron, who wanders Wyveria, sometimes hunts smaller creatures, displaying a similar survival instinct.
Why Were the Guardians Created?
As a dedicated fan, I’d rephrase it like this: I believe the enigmatic beings known as Guardians were crafted by an advanced ancient civilization hailing from the mystical land of Wyveria. The driving force behind their creation was none other than the potent Dragontorch and the rare Wyvern Milk, or Wylk. These artificial creatures were essentially designed to serve a dual purpose: as a safeguard against potential threats posed by other monsters that endangered Wyveria’s civilization, and also as a formidable weapon in their arsenal.
The exact motivation behind the formation of the Guardians remains unknown at this point. However, during the Higher Rank storyline, we do receive clues that, when put together, could potentially reveal why Wyveria might have established the Guardians. Towards the conclusion of the main story in Higher Rank, the Demi-Elder, a recurring character from earlier games called Gore Magala, reappears.
In various games, including Monster Hunter 4, it’s been Gore Magala who has played a significant role in the dissemination of the Frenzy Virus throughout the Forbidden Lands. This isn’t just about causing chaos; Gore Magala is portrayed as an entity that can disrupt entire ecosystems. It’s plausible that Wyverians created the Guardians, such as ourselves, to combat Gore Magala. Or maybe there’s something more potent at play, like Shagaru Magala. Interestingly, Zoh Shia, the most powerful Guardian, shares a similar skeletal structure with both Gore and Shagaru Magala.
Though it’s an intriguing idea, it remains purely theoretical or speculative at this point. Fingers crossed for more concrete information about the Guardians in future updates of Monster Hunter World.
