Is Quentin Quire the X-Men’s Last Hope to Save San Francisco from Xavier?

Ever since the conclusion of the Krakoa Era, the X-Men have been grappling with numerous challenges, and things have become even more complicated due to Charles Xavier’s actions. The ongoing X-Men saga, titled “X-Manhunt”, follows Xavier as he breaks out of Graymalkin Prison after his Shi’Ar daughter, Empress Xandra, is assaulted. Since then, he’s been on a mission with an enigmatic reward. Xavier has already encountered troubles with Rogue’s team of X-Men and sought help from Storm, which led him to San Francisco and into a confrontation with Cyclops’s team in X-Men #13, penned by Jed MacKay and Netho Diaz. With Storm harnessing the power of Eternity, the X-Men have their hands full. However, their greatest adversary might just be their former guide, Charles Xavier.

In a twist of events, Xavier’s brain, where his psychic abilities reside, has grown a tumor. This has made him unpredictable and more hazardous than before. The city of San Francisco is now grappling with the repercussions as Xavier’s powers inadvertently impact its residents. Despite catching Beast off guard, there’s an X-Man who could potentially curb Xavier’s actions. However, it’s none other than Quentin Quire, an unlikely ally among the X-Men due to his rebellious nature but immense power.

Quentin Quire Has a History of Making the X-Men’s Lives Much Harder

Quentin Quire’s journey with the X-Men mirrors a common tale for the team, yet its wildness remains unforgettable. Endowed with immense psionic abilities, Quentin was a prodigy among Earth’s inhabitants, requiring guidance. The Xavier School became his training ground, but an unexpected revelation about his adoption rocked his perception of reality. Life at this mutant institution didn’t meet his expectations as popular students ridiculed him, fueling his resentment towards the entire establishment and their pro-human ideals. Quentin’s growing animosity towards the world manifested into actions against the X-Men and fellow students. He started wearing “Magneto Was Right” shirts, stirring dissent among faculty members. After exposing one of his tormentors by using his powers to reveal their true form, he gathered sympathizers and orchestrated a riot during the school’s first open day for parents and media.

Initially, Quire’s assault was quite potent, prompting the X-Men to respond to his moves. However, the Stepford Cuckoos, five identical duplicates of Emma Frost, managed to halt his offensive. Regrettably, one of the Cuckoos he admired, Sophie, paid the ultimate price in this encounter.

Later, it was believed that Quire had perished due to his transformation into a form of pure psychic energy. However, the Phoenix Force resurrected him and led him to join the X-Men in San Francisco. He returned to his old ways, attempting to command mutants and assaulting the UN. As a result of a disagreement between Wolverine and Cyclops, Quire was sent to Wolverine’s new school.

Over time, Quire transitioned from a rebellious troublemaker to a well-disciplined team member. On Krakoa, he collaborated with X-Force and reconciled with his past rebellion following numerous deaths and resurrections. Eventually, Quire decided to reunite with Cyclops’s squad of X-Men.

Quentin Quire is the Only X-Man on Earth with the Power to Battle Xavier

Title “X-Manhunt” unfolds as Xavier’s past mistakes take their toll on his associates, with issue #13 of X-Men depicting the whole city of San Francisco in turmoil due to him. The X-Men leap into action, yet it’s the least likely hero that comes forth to save the day – Quentin Quire. Known for his hotheadedness and indifference towards humanity, Quire is not one to rush to others’ aid. However, the thought of him taking charge to rescue an entire city filled with humans was certainly unexpected.

It’s clear that Quire alone wouldn’t stand a chance against the most formidable and seasoned telepath out there. Despite Quire possessing immense power, he lacks the formal training to compete with Xavier. Yet, his determination to engage in battle demonstrates how far Quentin Quire has evolved over time. He was once a rebellious mutant with a self-centered streak, but this time he put everything on the line to face an adversary who could easily overpower him. This is a significant shift for the young man and proved beneficial not only for his team but also for the innocent residents of San Francisco.
