The new movie, Giant, features plenty of exciting boxing matches, as it’s based on the life of legendary British boxer Prince Naseem Hamed (played by Amir El-Masry).
One surprising moment in Rowan Athale’s film happens when Naseem’s trainer, Brendan Ingle (played by Pierce Brosnan), unexpectedly decides to fight his star pupil in a tense boxing match.
The film reveals that Ingle began coaching Naseem when he was only seven, recognizing his incredible talent. However, their initially strong, father-son-like relationship deteriorated as Naseem’s boxing career progressed, reaching a particularly difficult point by the time of that famous fight.

El-Masry also highlighted a later scene where the characters appear to reconcile, suggesting it provides a welcome contrast to their initial conflict.
He mentioned a particularly moving scene Rowan wrote that was a key reason he decided to take the role. It beautifully captures the complex relationship between a father and son, with one trying to find his own path and the other wanting to remain connected to his roots.
When asked about trying boxing for the film, Brosnan said he loved the entire filmmaking experience.
He described it as a deeply moving experience, explaining that the limited time, the emotional power of the script, and their shared desire to convey the story—all while remaining silent—created a unique intensity.
We didn’t have much of a social life back then. It was mostly just work, rehearsals, and then going home. Amir would work out and study, and I did the same – I focused on studying. It was a pretty isolated existence; we didn’t go out or socialize much.
Honestly, stepping into this role felt less like acting and more like living a second life. It was a really immersive experience – just a constant cycle of getting up, going to work, and then mentally preparing to do it all over again. I really felt like I was the character, constantly, which was both challenging and rewarding.
Brosnan shared that playing the role of Ingle reminded him of when he first started acting. He described the Sheffield trainer as a truly admirable and selfless person.
Giant is now showing in UK cinemas.
