Marathon’s December Playtest Indicates 55 Skins Across Six Runners – Rumour

I’m so hyped for Marathon! Bungie’s been doing closed playtests – everything is super secret, of course – and someone who got to play back in December accidentally leaked some info. TheGamePost picked up on it, and it looks like we got our first glimpses of the skins for the six playable characters, which they’re calling ‘Runners’. It’s not much, but it’s exciting to see more of the game as we get closer to the 2026 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S!

The recent leak suggests about 55 character skins will be available, distributed fairly evenly among the different Runners. Specifically, Triage, Destroyer, and Recon each have 8 skins, while Assassin and Thief have 10. Vandal currently has the most, with 11 skins. However, it’s important to remember that this information is based on playtest versions of the game and the final numbers could be different when it’s officially released.

Players will probably unlock these skins in a few ways: by completing challenges and leveling up, by purchasing them directly in the game with real money, or through a battle pass. Additionally, the Vandal, Destroyer, Assassin, and Thief skins will be available to those who buy the Deluxe Edition of Marathon.

Just last month, Bungie announced that Marathon will be released in March 2026 and cost $39.99. The game will launch with four maps: Perimeter, Dire Marsh, Outpost, and the Cryo Archive from the UESC Marathon. However, the Cryo Archive map won’t be playable until after the game’s first season begins shortly after launch.

The studio confirmed that Marathon will include Reward Passes that players can keep indefinitely. This means you’ll still be able to earn cosmetic items and other rewards even after new seasons are released. They also emphasized that success in the game won’t depend on how much money you spend.

I was really sad to hear that Joseph Cross, the art director for the new game, is leaving Bungie! He posted on social media saying how proud he is of the look and feel they created for Marathon, and how rare it is to get this kind of support for something a little different. He also said the art team at Bungie is the best around. Honestly, he sounds like he’s just as excited to play the game with us as a fan, which is awesome! He gave a huge thanks to everyone who supported the project, and it’s clear how much passion he has for it.

So, I was reading another interview with Cross, and he clarified that leaving Bungie was totally his own call. He said he’s really proud of what he accomplished while he was there, especially his work on Marathon and Destiny 2. It’s cool to hear him say that, you know?

The creation of Marathon faced several challenges, leading Bungie to postpone its original release date and prioritize additional testing. These issues included accusations that the game’s artwork copied the work of artist Antireal. However, Antireal announced in early December that she and the studio had reached a resolution.
