Upcoming Open-World RPG Could Be the Pirate Game We’ve Been Waiting For

Pirates are consistently popular in movies and entertainment, especially thanks to the huge success of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. However, there haven’t been many truly great pirate video games. Sea of Thieves, released in 2018, is one of the best, and Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is also a strong choice. Unfortunately, many recent games that promised exciting pirate adventures have ultimately fallen short of expectations.

Fans were really excited when Ubisoft first announced Skull and Bones in 2017. But after a long development process, the game launched in 2024 to disappointing reviews. Even with several updates, it still has a ‘Mixed’ rating on Steam, leaving many players hoping for a truly great pirate game. Now, the recent gameplay trailer for Sea of Remnants suggests a potential new option that could finally deliver the swashbuckling pirate experience players have been waiting for.

Sea of Remnants Could Finally Give Us the Pirate Game Of Our Dreams

Sea of Remnants is a new open-world RPG being developed by Joker Studio and published by NetEase Games, known for popular free-to-play games like Marvel Rivals. While it was initially shown at the PlayStation State of Play event this summer, excitement for the game is really building now thanks to a detailed gameplay trailer that was recently released.

The trailer begins with a dramatic introduction to the game’s story, which is set in a world populated by pirate puppets. It then showcases gameplay of Sea of Remnants, including mini-games like gambling, exploring the game world, and interacting with other players. We also get a glimpse of exciting pirate ship battles and combat.

Sea of Remnants appears to be a well-rounded game combining both land and sea exploration. It promises platforming, puzzles, and both ship and on-foot combat. This seems like a more balanced approach than Skull and Bones offered when it first came out – I still remember how repetitive that game felt! Sea of Remnants looks like a charming and enjoyable experience, with diverse gameplay that could finally deliver the pirate adventure players have been waiting for.

We’ve been excited about games before, only to be disappointed by bugs and a lack of content. It’s difficult to say if Sea of Remnants will be different until we can actually play it. However, early impressions are good, and we’ll have a better idea of what to expect from this open-world RPG soon.

Some Gamers Will Get to Check Out Sea of Remnants Sooner Than You Think

The game Sea of Remnants is currently planned to launch in 2026, though a specific date hasn’t been announced. NetEase has announced that a Closed Alpha Test will begin on February 5th, giving approved testers an early look at the game. Players interested in trying it out can apply to be an alpha tester through the official Sea of Remnants Discord server.

We may not receive direct feedback right away, as early tests usually come with confidentiality agreements. However, we hope players will get a good impression of the game and share thoughts that can help us improve Sea of Remnants. We’re also considering more public beta tests before the full launch, though we haven’t announced any plans for those yet.

The game will be released on PC through Steam and PlayStation 5 later this year. You can add it to your wishlist now to be notified as soon as Sea of Remnants is available.
