As a devoted fan, I can’t hide my excitement as Marvel delves into the dark realm of a character’s death reminiscent of the shocking twists in Game of Thrones. The mesmerizing world of Westeros has long served as a rich source of inspiration, most notably in the numerous Game of Thrones spinoffs HBO is brewing up. What makes Game of Thrones so captivating is the unpredictability – no character is immune to a sudden and unexpected demise, be it the Red Wedding or the Battle of the Bastards.
In the world of comics, death can stir controversy due to its temporary nature. Yet, the permanence of a comic book death doesn’t diminish its ability to shock us, as we witnessed in the latest issue of Ultimates.
BEWARE: Spoilers for The Ultimates #11 lie ahead.
In issue #11 of “The Ultimates,” the creative team consisting of Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and VC’s Travis Lanham present the story. The focus is on Thor and Sif as they journey back to Asgard to confront Loki, a member of the Maker’s evil council. While they’ve been engaged in battles alongside the Ultimates, they now take a break to tackle their Loki predicament. Known for his tricks, Loki governs over the Nine Realms and maintains extensive surveillance. To evade his spies, Thor and Sif visit Nidavellir, where dwarves have been transformed into factory workers. The heroes then negotiate with Brokk and Eitri, who craft invisible cloaks to enable them to move without being detected by Loki’s informants.
A specific page portrays the grand throne room of Asgard, where Loki is shown indulging in mead while illegitimately occupying the throne that once belonged to King Odin. The throne’s previous owner, Loki having seized the crown, orchestrated Odin’s demise and displayed his head on a spear near the throne as a chilling reminder of his power grab.
Odin’s death is giving off major Game of Thrones vibes
The gruesome spectacle of Odin’s decapitated head impaled upon a spear within the grandeur of Asgard’s throne room echoes the chilling scenes from ‘Game of Thrones’. For instance, after Ned Stark was deceived in Season 1, King Joffrey commanded his execution, whereupon his head was severed, and the Hound brandished it as a grisly trophy. Similarly, Robb Stark’s death during the Red Wedding led to his beheading, with his Direwolf’s skull displayed atop his lifeless body. Numerous times in ‘Game of Thrones’, heads have been displayed on pikes to instill terror among the populace.
In “Ultimates” #11, Loki constantly has Odin’s severed head with him. Additionally, Loki appears quite overweight due to his frequent drunken sprees, much like the portly Thor we see in “Avengers: Endgame”. The narrator describes him as follows: “Odin’s head, foul yet saintly, impaled at his side.” “He screams prophecies, madness, a preserved nightmare. Protected from decay with spells and enchantments.
In a different wording: Thor and Sif are capable of amassing forces for their mission. Whilst Thor engages in combat against Jotenheim, Sif infiltrates Asgard and liberates Idunn before the team seeks refuge in Niffleheim. Characters like the Warriors Three — Volstagg, Fandral, and Hogun, as well as Heimdall, make brief appearances. They announce war on Loki, but the outcome of that battle is not shown.
