‘Altered Carbon’ Season 3 Still Needs To Happen at Netflix

A fantastic cyberpunk show premiered on Netflix in 2016, but unfortunately, it was canceled after only two seasons in 2018. Even now, over five years later, fans are still disappointed it’s gone. The show was exceptionally well-made and deserves a second chance, and with the current popularity of sci-fi TV, a continuation would likely be a success. Netflix hasn’t announced any plans for more episodes, but a revival isn’t out of the question.

Altered Carbon is a science fiction series based on a book trilogy by Richard K. Morgan, originally published in the 2000s. The show explores a future where human consciousness can be digitized, allowing people to be resurrected if their memories are saved. While often compared to Blade Runner – and clearly influenced by it – Altered Carbon has its own distinct qualities. If the show returns, it has the potential to further establish its originality.

Most shows rely on a consistent cast, even in science fiction. But Altered Carbon uniquely allowed Netflix to break that mold. The original novels follow a single character, but the show’s worldbuilding—where minds can be transferred into different bodies, called ‘sleeves’—made it possible to have different actors play Takeshi Kovacs across seasons one and two, which served the story well. Beyond the cool cyberpunk setting, the show also captivated viewers with its compelling characters and dark, engaging storylines. Importantly, bringing the show back wouldn’t necessarily require any of the original cast members to return.

Adding to the evidence, the excitement around Apple TV’s upcoming Neuromancer series shows people still want to see live-action cyberpunk stories. This sci-fi style hasn’t gotten much attention lately, with only a few shows like Altered Carbon trying to fill the gap. The only other notable cyberpunk show on the horizon is Blade Runner 2099. Since Altered Carbon was originally hoped to be a successor to Blade Runner, this highlights how few cyberpunk shows there are. Reviving Altered Carbon could help balance things out and encourage even more exciting cyberpunk stories and adaptations in the future.

The first season of Altered Carbon closely followed the plot of Richard K. Morgan’s original novel. While some changes were necessary, the show and book told essentially the same story. Season 2, however, strayed from the source material. The second book sends Kovacs on a different journey with only loose ties to the first, and Netflix seemed determined to create a straightforward narrative. As a result, the show moved away from Morgan’s books, using only small pieces of the story.

Although it was frustrating when the show ended, it does mean there are still two books from the series that never made it to Netflix. If the show were to come back, there’s enough material to create at least two more seasons before needing to create new storylines. When that time comes, the writers should stick to the original spirit of the books. The strength of Altered Carbon lies in Kovacs’s journey as he travels between bodies and planets, getting into trouble – that’s what made the books so good, and it wasn’t fully captured after the first season of the show.
