Why Hytale Is Not on Steam (Here’s How to Buy It)

The journey to release for Hytale has been anything but smooth. What began as a popular Minecraft server evolved into a full-fledged RPG. Announced back in 2018, the game faced cancellation after Riot Games acquired its developer, Hypixel Studios, in 2020. However, Hytale unexpectedly reappeared as an independent project shortly after. After a lengthy development period, this Minecraft-inspired fantasy game is now available in Early Access – but players won’t find it on Steam.

Okay, so Hytale officially dropped into Early Access on January 13th, and wow, what a launch! Apparently, over 2.8 million people were playing at the same time just after one day! Now, if you’re like me and automatically went to Steam to grab it, you’re out of luck… for now. It’s not on Steam yet. Here’s the deal with why Hytale skipped Steam for Early Access, and how I figured out how to actually get my hands on the game so I could check out all the hype.

Why Hytale Isn’t on Steam

Before the game officially launches in Early Access, the team at Hytale has published a FAQ to answer questions from fans. In the FAQ, Hytale’s Executive Director, Patrick Derbic, explained that the game won’t be released on Steam at first. He didn’t rule out a Steam release completely, but it doesn’t seem likely to happen in the near future.

According to Derbic, the team behind Hytale wants to collaborate with their current players to refine the game throughout Early Access. To achieve this, they’ve decided not to release the game on Steam, as they fear a surge of initial, potentially unhelpful, feedback could steer the game in the wrong direction. They aim to shape the game’s development with input from players who are already familiar with Hytale’s world and lore. Derbic emphasizes that they aren’t trying to dodge criticism, but rather ensure feedback comes from a dedicated and engaged player base.

While preventing a flood of quick, initial reviews isn’t the sole reason Hytale isn’t available on Steam, the platform also lacks support for some of the game’s modding capabilities. The development team is currently discussing these issues with Valve, hoping to find solutions before considering a Steam release.

How to Play Hytale In Early Access

Even though you won’t find Hytale on Steam, you can still play it on PC right now as part of Early Access. It supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. The developers are also considering releasing it on consoles in the future, probably after the full game (version 1.0) is finished.

To play Hytale, you’ll need to buy and download it from the official Hytale website. The Standard version costs $19.99, while the Supporter and Cursebreaker editions are available for $34.99 and $69.99, respectively. You can check the game’s system requirements here to make sure your computer can run it. Before purchasing, you’ll need to either log in with your existing account or create a new one on the Hytale website.

You can purchase and download Hytale now. If you pre-order one of the available packages, you’ll get Early Access starting January 13th. The more expensive packages include extra in-game items, like unique cosmetic gear. To start playing Hytale, you’ll first need to download and install the official launcher from the Hytale website. This launcher will be how you access the game, both during Early Access and after the full release. Once the launcher is set up, you can download the game files you’ve purchased and begin exploring what Hytale has to offer.
