These PCs can finally upgrade to the latest version of Windows 11

Devices previously unable to update to the Windows 11 2024 Release (Windows 11 version 24H2) can now be updated to the most recent version of Windows.

It came to light last year that specific applications wouldn’t function properly when run on computers with Windows 11 version 24H2. To avoid complications, Microsoft temporarily restricted any devices utilizing these problematic apps from upgrading, thereby preventing the upgrade of PCs operating affected apps.

Microsoft outlined the issue in a support document:

Following the installation of Windows 11 version 24H2, certain personalization apps may fail to open or operate properly. Several applications are experiencing this issue, and problems can manifest as incorrectly displayed wallpapers, missing desktop icons, loss of desktop preview functionality, difficulties with virtual desktops, or error messages from the application itself.

The problem has since been resolved, and it seems this solution pertains to app developers making updates within their software. When attempting to update your computer to the Windows 11 version 24H2, you might encounter a prompt advising you to remove your current wallpaper application.

Microsoft suggests users consider updating their wallpaper applications as a new update might make these apps work seamlessly with the Windows 11 version 24H2. For instance, Wallpaper Engine has recently been updated to enhance its performance with the Windows 11 24H2 version.

Due to a compatibility issue, some apps are causing a delay in the availability of the Windows 11 version 24H2 update for you. Microsoft anticipates resolving this problem as soon as updates for the affected apps become available.
