Bobby Brown didn’t need permission to make his own decisions, but it seems he regrets this one.
Twenty years following Britney Spears’ 2004 collaboration on the remake of Teddy Riley’s 1988 song “My Prerogative“, the Grammy-winning artist expressed his opinions on the track.
On the April 16th episode of the Club Shay Shay podcast, Bobby expressed his disappointment with Britney Spears’ rendition of ‘My Prerogative.’ He mentioned that it was produced by Teddy Riley, but he found the performance to be a disfigurement. It was so bad, he couldn’t bear listening to it.
As a devoted fan, I took care of it specifically because it belonged to Britney Spears. I was confident in my choice, as Teddy played an integral role in the original version.
TopMob News has reached out to Britney’s team for comment and has not heard back.
However, as for a New Edition member, it seems none of the cover versions of his songs have caught his approval thus far. In fact, he stated candidly, “I don’t believe any of their interpretations truly did justice to the original tunes of my compositions.
After releasing “Can You Stand the Rain,” the singer mentioned that he has grown more careful when it comes to approving his music for release.
He expressed that he needed to listen carefully since today’s children can be unpredictable in their speech. He explained that the language they use sometimes isn’t suitable for a song association.
As for how Bobby came up with his own musical style?
He reminisced, “I wasn’t afraid, you see. There was no one to challenge me as a competitor… All I aimed for was to become the finest artist possible.
He shared that he admired Michael Jackson, Prince, Rick James, and Stevie Wonder, and aimed to emulate something they weren’t. In the end, it was this unique approach that shaped him into who we know as Bobby Brown.
Bobby, who tied the knot with Alicia Etheredge in 2012, five years following the finalization of his divorce from Whitney Houston, has certainly grown and adapted since creating his own identity four decades ago. Interestingly, he once shared the key to his lasting success.
In 2018, when speaking with Billboard, I emphasized the importance of consistently creating quality music. For me, music isn’t just a business anymore; it’s about artistic expression and sharing the best work possible. So, I dedicate my time to crafting music in the studio that I believe is worthwhile, and if it doesn’t meet my standards, I won’t release it.
