As a devoted fan, I must share my perspective on Ben Affleck’s thoughts about portraying Batman in recent interviews. It’s no secret that playing a superhero has become commonplace for many A-list actors these days, with Marvel, DC, and independent comic companies eagerly adapting characters for both the big and small screens. However, characters like Batman carry a unique significance due to their enduring impact on popular culture.
Ben Affleck has had the distinction of playing Batman more times than any other actor in theatrical films, appearing in four (or five, if we count additional scenes for Zack Snyder’s Justice League) DC productions. Yet, as fascinating as it was to step into such an iconic role, he expressed his dislikes during the interview, making me curious about his experiences.
Despite receiving acclaim for his portrayal of Batman and Bruce Wayne, the films Ben Affleck starred in didn’t receive much praise. Many issues stemmed from corporate interference on most DC projects he was involved with. For instance, Suicide Squad underwent significant edits during post-production, according to director David Ayer; the released version wasn’t his original cut. The Flash suffered due to changes in leadership at the studio who wanted something different from the movie. Justice League, on the other hand, has a well-known story of Joss Whedon reshooting large parts of Zack Snyder’s film after he left production. Initially, Affleck had plans for his own Batman movie, but these fell apart as he stepped away from the DC universe.
Ben Affleck Hated Wearing the Batman’s Suit
Reflecting on my time donning the iconic cape and cowl, I must say that bringing Batman to life in “Batman v Superman” was a captivating journey for me. The concept of an aging Dark Knight resonated deeply, offering a unique perspective that I found compelling. Working alongside the talented team behind the movie, as well as filming in Detroit, were undeniably rewarding experiences.
However, there was a slight hiccup – my young son found my portrayal of Batman a tad too intimidating. But what truly surprised fans might shock you. When discussing my stint on “The Flash,” I couldn’t help but express that the Batsuit, while symbolizing an icon, is undoubtedly the most challenging aspect of embodying Batman. A rather intriguing revelation, wouldn’t you agree?
Affleck expressed his dislike for the Batsuits, stating they were uncomfortable and poorly designed. He explained that they are difficult to wear due to their heat and lack of ventilation, and that they prioritize appearance over comfort. This results in him sweating excessively while wearing them, leading him to frequently pour water over himself to cool down.
Wearing the costume is one aspect, but adding a helmet takes things to another level. It seems like all the warmth leaves your body and you feel it intensely. Even the most skilled and physically fit stunt performers can only endure this for around 45-50 minutes before overheating. This heat issue made filming challenging as it was scorching hot. Moreover, it doesn’t make you feel heroic because you become instantly exhausted, drenched in sweat, and struggling to hide the sweat running down your face. Christian Bale or Robert Pattinson might have handled it better, but I found this part of the production to be the least enjoyable for me.
From a fan’s point of view, slipping into a top-notch Batman costume would undeniably feel empowering… yet, it doesn’t seem particularly glamorous. Previously, Affleck has shared that Christian Bale advised him to ask for a zipper in his suit so he could easily access the bathroom. It seems that future Batman actors might also consider demanding some sort of ventilation or cooling system to make their experience more comfortable!
It’s highly improbable that Affleck will revisit his superhero roles in the future, given his past experiences playing Daredevil and Batman which yielded varying success. While a large-scale multiverse film may tempt him back to one of these characters someday, Ben Affleck appears to be concentrating on creating smaller-scale dramas, similar to the projects he worked on prior to taking on Batman.
