Monster Hunter Wilds reportedly gives better FPS and performance to players who bought more DLC — will Capcom respond?

Monster Hunter Wilds has been out for almost a year now, and while it sold over 10 million copies, I was really disappointed with it. The game was too easy, the endgame felt incomplete, and the multiplayer system was overly complicated.

The PC version of the game has performed very poorly, leading to overwhelmingly negative reviews on Steam. While Capcom has focused on improving the endgame experience with updates – adding tougher monsters, new items, and even a crossover with Final Fantasy XIV – they haven’t addressed the performance issues on PC.

A Reddit user, u/de_Tylmarande, claims to have found a key reason why Monster Hunter Wilds isn’t running well on many PCs, particularly those with average hardware.

MH Wilds – Bad performance mystery (Solved?) from r/MonsterHunter

A user on Reddit, u/de_Tylmarande, believes performance problems in Monster Hunter Wilds may be linked to the game checking which downloadable content a player has purchased. They found this while testing with two Steam accounts – one with no DLC and one with all available content.

The game constantly checked which downloadable content players owned. Testing showed that players with more DLC installed generally experienced smoother performance with fewer technical issues.

de_Tylmarande experimented with a modification that removed the game’s check for downloadable content ownership. They were surprised to find this actually boosted performance by 75% – going from 26 frames per second (fps) to 46 fps in the Windward Plains area.

Since Monster Hunter Wilds will likely have a lot of small downloadable content like armor appearances, weapon designs, stickers, and emotes, it’s understandable that checking which content players own might slow down the game.

This unexpectedly pushes your computer’s processor to run faster, seemingly attempting to identify Steam accounts, which unfortunately lowers the game Monster Hunter Wilds’ performance.

This is probably just an accidental bug. However, it’s surprising that Capcom didn’t find this major issue during their nearly year of post-launch testing, especially since a Reddit user discovered it in their free time.

Capcom might fix these issues soon. They’ve announced a performance update for the Steam version, scheduled to release on January 28, 2026, on their Japanese X (formerly Twitter) account.

There’s a chance the next update from Capcom might not resolve the problem with how the game checks for DLC ownership, which is currently causing performance issues and frame drops.

If necessary, a user named de_Tylmarande says they will complete and publicly share the mod that removes the requirement for owning the DLC, offering it as a final solution.

Will these solutions actually improve Monster Hunter Wilds on PC and win back players who were disappointed with its performance? We’ll continue to monitor the game—both through official updates and player fixes—and will share any improvements we see.

With Capcom planning a patch for Monster Hunter Wilds on January 28, 2026, are you hoping it will improve PC performance, or are you planning to rely on community-made mods to fix any issues?
