This year, the Emmy Awards are taking a new direction as CBS has selected Nate Bargatze, a non-political Christian comedian, to host the 77th annual ceremony. The event will take place live at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 14th, starting at 8 p.m. Eastern Time (5 p.m. Pacific Time). The show will be broadcasted on CBS, and you can also stream it simultaneously on Paramount+.
2024 saw me, Bargatze, breaking records as the year’s top-grossing touring comedian with over 1.2 million ticket sales. As I grace the Emmys stage this year, I bring a refreshing change of pace – one that is squeaky clean, brimming with insightful observations, and deliberately devoid of political commentary. My humor, appealing to families everywhere, stands in stark contrast to the self-satisfied, progressive rhetoric that’s become commonplace in many recent awards ceremonies.
What an incredible privilege it is for me to be chosen as the host of this legendary award ceremony! I’m absolutely thrilled to collaborate with CBS and craft an evening filled with joy and entertainment, a show that will delight families worldwide.
It seems that this mission fits with CBS’s apparent goal of transforming the Emmys into a platform to honor entertainment, rather than a stage for political statements. This change follows closely on the heels of the 2024 Oscars, hosted by non-political comedian Conan O’Brien, which garnered better ratings and widespread acclaim for its emphasis on comedy over political rhetoric. The positive response to this event may have played a role in choosing Bargatze for the job.

Year after year, ratings for award shows have noticeably dipped, a trend partly attributed to their frequent political statements. Previous hosts such as Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert would frequently use their platform to criticize former President Donald Trump and promote progressive viewpoints. Although these tactics may have resonated with certain influential groups, they caused many viewers to lose interest.

It appears that with Bargatze leading the Emmys and O’Brien’s recent Oscar victory, Hollywood might be realizing that ignoring or alienating half of the population is not a successful approach.
Born into a Southern Baptist family and openly identifying as Christian, Bargatze chooses to separate his personal beliefs from his stand-up routine. His humor is centered around familiar themes such as family, journeys, and the amusing absurdity of daily life. He’s garnered a dedicated fanbase by focusing solely on being humorous – avoiding content that might offend, create division, or delve into politics. In an era where it can be challenging to maintain neutrality, his approach is proving successful. His Netflix specials frequently top the platform’s charts, and his 2023 Saturday Night Live performance with the “Washington’s Dream” sketch went viral.

With Nate Bargatze’s Nashville Christmas proving successful on CBS, it’s evident that the network views him as more than just a comedian; they see him as a unifying figure. And for an Emmys show that’s had difficulty connecting with mainstream viewers in the past, this could be just what is needed at this particular juncture.
It’s uncertain if this change is permanent, but it’s obvious that the Emmys are opting for a host who avoids preaching, lecturing, and making offensive jokes like Nate Bargatze. For some viewers, this could be the refreshing change they didn’t realize they needed.
