In a recent report by Variety, it’s been announced that House of the Dragon has added three new knights to its cast in the ongoing Targaryen civil war, known as “the dance of the dragons.” Tom Cullen will take on the role of Ser Luthor Largent, Joplin Sibtain will portray “Bold” Jon Roxton, and Barry Sloane will embody Ser Adrian Redfort. These characters hail from George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood and are expected to be significant players in the struggle between Rhaenyra’s “Black council” and the “Green council” backing Aegon II. Filming for House of the Dragon Season 3 is currently underway, with a planned release on HBO and Max sometime in 2026. Each actor brings valuable experience from their previous roles to Westeros.
Cullen boasts a unique set of skills suitable for this role, as he portrayed Sir Landry on the History channel’s historical series Knightfall, and Viscount Gillingham in Downton Abbey. This Welsh actor has also graced our screens on Black Mirror, collaborated with Kit Harington (formerly of Game of Thrones) on Gunpowder, and his character is a knight who started as a commoner but rose through the ranks to command the City Watch of King’s Landing – a position he should have already held by now in the show. Cullen is famed for his remarkable strength and size, with tales even suggesting that he once killed a warhorse with a single blow.
Currently, English actor Joplin Sibtain might be a face you recognize if you’re watching the series Andor on Disney+, as he portrays Rebel Brasso. In this show, he embodies a leader from a lesser house in The Reach, who is aligned with Aegon and the Greens. Known as “Impulsive Jon,” his temperament is notorious for its quickness, and he wields his family’s ancient Valyrian steel longsword, which bears the name “Orphan-Maker.
In summary, Sloane boasts an impressive list of accomplishments, but some of his finest work could still be ahead. He’s set to star as “The Prodigal,” the seventh sibling of The Endless in Netflix’s The Sandman Season 2. His versatile acting career spans across numerous American and British TV shows, and he lent his voice to Captain Price in four Call of Duty games. In the storyline we find him now, Sloane plays Adrian, a character from one of the most prestigious noble families in the Vale, the Redforts. However, details about this family are scarce at this stage in the narrative. His character, Adrian, has not been explicitly mentioned in the story nor has his role been disclosed yet, so I’ll avoid revealing any spoilers.
In contrast to Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is delving deeper by featuring named characters from various lesser-known houses within Westeros, a point that fans had criticized the original series for reducing in its later seasons when it came to intricate knightly ceremonies and the grand display of many house heraldries. However, this prequel seems to be making amends for that by already introducing more of these elements, with the characters we’ve seen cast for Season 3 promising even more depth yet to come.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the House of the Dragon is currently being filmed for its third season, set to hit our screens some time next year. Additionally, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is scheduled to premiere on HBO and Max in 2025. If you can’t wait until then, George R.R. Martin’s books, including Fire & Blood, are readily available in print, digital, or audiobook formats for your reading pleasure!
