After being released by Marvel Studios, former Marvel star Jonathan Majors continues to have the support of one significant MCU co-star.
In December 2023, it was announced that Majors had been dismissed from his position as Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), following his arrest for reckless assault and harassment in March 2023. This decision significantly altered the storyline for the franchise, as Kang was previously planned to be the main villain of the Multiverse Saga.
Generally speaking, discussions about Majors’ dismissal from Marvel weren’t common among the actors and executives. Instead, they tended to steer clear of the matter as Marvel moved forward with new directions for its franchise.
Jonathan Majors Gets Support From Major MCU Star Post-Exit
In an interview with GQ, longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Michael B. Jordan expressed his backing for Jonathan Majors, who was dismissed from portraying Kang the Conqueror following a court verdict that found him guilty of reckless assault and harassment.
As a movie buff who had the privilege of collaborating with Jordan on “Creed III”, I must confess that it wasn’t easy watching the unfolding of Jonathan Majors’ legal issues – it was a challenging scenario for sure.
Nevertheless, Jordan voiced his sense of pride over Majors’ resilience and fortitude, feeling content with his current state.
However, things are going well for him now; he’s recently gotten engaged. I’m immensely proud of his resilience and strength throughout this journey, and the way he’s managing everything. I’m happy to see him doing well. That’s my son alright.
When asked about potentially working with Majors once more, Jordan responded affirmatively on two separate occasions, stating, “‘Indeed.’” or simply, “‘Absolutely, yes.’
After Majors’ dismissal, Marvel decided to alter the Kang actor’s role within the Multiverse Saga. Consequently, they rehired Robert Downey Jr. to play Doctor Doom in both “Avengers: Secret Wars” and the newly named “Avengers: Doomsday,” which was previously known as “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
Could Jonathan Majors Ever Return to the MCU?
It appears that, due to the escalation of Majors’ legal issues, Marvel was left with little option other than to alter their course. Yet, there remains a question among many as to whether this decision could potentially be reversed in the future.
Lately, Majors hinted at a potential reprisal of his MCU character if offered, expressing fond memories of collaborating with actors such as Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Since then, he has not appeared in the MCU following his portrayal of the Victor Timely variant of Kang during Season 2 of Loki.
Though Majors appears to be putting in a great deal of effort to reshape his public persona, both within Hollywood and beyond, the fruits of his labor have yet to materialize. Apart from the long-delayed release of “Magazine Dreams“, there are currently no new films or television projects lined up on his schedule.
Regrettably, Marvel had relied too much on him to lead their next two Avengers films following Ant-Man 3, leaving a significant gap for the studio when he departed. In fact, they allegedly shifted their original strategy to emphasize Kang more heavily because of Majors’ prior work on that role before his arrest.
In simpler terms, because Majors left such a large gap, Marvel needed Robert Downey Jr., who is crucial to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), to reignite excitement for the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga. With Downey’s upcoming role as Doctor Doom in the next two Avengers movies, it appears that the MCU has been revitalized amidst these challenges.
At this point, it’s extremely improbable, if not entirely impossible, for Marvel to contact Majors again and have him reprise his role as Kang in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project. Although there’s always a chance, the bridge seems to be permanently charred, requiring time before it can be considered again.
