Blade Reboot Timeline Revealed: Would’ve Been Earliest MCU Movie

The progress on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s sequel is still mostly theoretical, as the highly anticipated reboot of Blade remains uncertain. However, Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter provides fresh insights into what the shelved Blade reboot might have featured, revealing it was set in a vintage era, much like her upcoming film.

As a passionate fan, I was thrilled to hear that on the John Campea Show, the talented costume designer, Carter, who’s famous for her work in the Black Panther film series, had been tapped by Marvel to design the costumes for the upcoming Blade 4, announced back in 2019. Carter confirmed rumors that this Blade remake would be set in the 1920s, staying true to its comic book origins, as half-man, half-vampire Eric Brooks was born during London’s Great Depression in 1929. “I was preparing Blade for Marvel,” Carter shared, “and it was a 1920s Blade story.” Unfortunately, when the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike hit us hard, I found myself in a state of uncertainty, joining several others who had to step away from the project.

If the revival of the “Blade” franchise had been placed in the 1920s, it would have been one of the earliest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films chronologically, coming before the 1960s-set futuristic film, and the 1940s-era movies like “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “Agent Carter.” Additionally, “Eternals,” originally set in 5000 B.C., primarily unfolded in the present day. Rumors from inside sources suggest that “Blade 4” would begin in the 1920s, then span across various time periods.

Carter is among several individuals connected with the group known as “Sinners” who have voiced concerns about the production issues surrounding “Blade 4”. Delroy Lindo, initially cast in “Blade 4”, was one of many to part ways with the reboot last year, along with Aaron Pierre and director Yann Demange. The second director to leave the project, Demange departed before things began to unravel, leading to his exit. As for the current status of “Blade 4”, Mahershala Ali and Mia Goth are the only confirmed cast members, but a release date has yet to be set.

As a fan, I’ve found myself intrigued by the news that after Blade 4 was taken off the table, Carter got involved with another period film focusing on vampires titled Sinners. This movie is directed by the mastermind behind the Black Panther franchise, Ryan Coogler. After discussing his ideas for the film set in Mississippi during the 1930s, I jumped aboard the Warner Bros. production of this thriller.

Having spent a considerable amount of time researching for Blade, a vampire-themed story, Carter’s wife and fellow producer on Sinners, Zinzi, reached out to me. She shared that Ryan had an exciting concept for a period piece revolving around vampires. Given that I had been immersed in the vampire world while preparing for Blade, which unfortunately didn’t materialize, I was eager to listen to what he had to say.

Incredulously, I learned that not only was Ryan working on a period film but also a vampire movie. Considering the possibilities for his next project following Black Panther [Wakanda Forever], I wouldn’t have predicted this genre choice.

Sinners Is a Major Hit

It’s currently among the top-earning horror films of all time, raking in $80 million globally. Jordan plays dual roles as twin brothers, sharing screen time with Lindo, Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Jayme Lawson, and Wunmi Mosaku.

Sinners is now showing in theaters.
