The Conner family is saying goodnight.
As a dedicated fan, I’m deeply saddened to share that the journey of The Conners has come to an end, over three decades since we first welcomed this extraordinary sitcom family into our homes. On April 23rd, in a heartfelt one-hour special, Dan (John Goodman), Becky (Lecy Goranson), Darlene (Sara Gilbert), and Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) bid their emotional farewell to us viewers.
The opening installment of the two-part conclusion, named “Exercise Bands, Financial Strategies, and Distant Destinations,” traces Dan’s journey as he gears up for the courtroom battle against the pharmaceutical firm responsible for the opioid that claimed his wife Roseanne’s (Roseanne Barr) life.
Darlene is taken aback when her 19-year-old son Ames McNamara informs her that he’s relocating to New York City. Although she isn’t completely prepared for him to depart, she manages to bid him farewell in her own unique way. At the same time, Becky and her partner Tyler (Sean Astin) make a significant advancement in their relationship by deciding to open a shared bank account together.
In the second segment titled “The Truck Stops Here,” Dan tenderly refers to his deceased wife as his “one true love” in a heartfelt eulogy, which earns him a monetary reward from the company. However, when the entire family – Jackie, Becky, and Darlene – come together at Roseanne’s gravesite to share this significant moment, they discover that the check is actually for only $700, significantly less than the substantial payout they had anticipated.
Regardless, every member of the Conner clan bids farewell to Roseanne, each expressing their personal triumphs. For Jackie, it’s her return to the police department, while both daughters present their mothers with glimpses of the men they admire deeply.
Simultaneously, Darlene and David’s oldest child, Harris (Emma Kenney), informs her grandmother that she is now the owner of the Lanford Lunch Box restaurant. Meanwhile, Louise (Katey Sagal), Dan’s second spouse, offers him a quiet time at Roseanne’s grave, allowing him to contemplate their family. She says, “We always said if our children were still alive by the end of the day, we did well. I think we surpassed that.
In the evening, they each have their chance to share a heartfelt farewell with one another. Eventually, it’s Dan who sits on the couch, gazing intently into the camera, bidding goodnight to viewers watching from home.
At the conclusion, executive producers Dan Helford and Dave Caplan decided it was important to keep the Conners’ tale ongoing, ensuring their narratives remained unfinished. “We didn’t want an ending that felt like someone flipping off a switch and shutting everything down,” Dave explained to TV Insider on April 18. “The Conners continue.
According to Dan, it’s consistent with their personalities, which is something that the viewers of this series seem to appreciate.
Ever since 1988, the Conner family has been a constant source of laughter and relatability for me. That’s when Roseanne, a sitcom centered around the hilarious antics of the titular comedian’s working-class family, first graced our screens, running until 1997. Fast forward to 2018, an incredible 21 years later, and ABC decided to bring back this beloved series! The original cast, including John, Lecy, Sara, Laurie, and none other than Michael Fishman, all returned for this revival. I couldn’t believe it!
Despite the success of its tenth season, Roseanne generated controversy following a racially insensitive tweet about a member of former President Barack Obama’s administration, resulting in her dismissal from the show and a reworking of the series into a spinoff titled The Conners. In this spinoff, the character played by Roseanne has unfortunately passed away due to an accidental drug overdose. Despite the difficult beginnings of The Conners, the family has persevered, and now, seven seasons later, the cast is bidding farewell to these cherished characters.
Sara, portraying Darlene, expressed to Us Weekly on the 18th of April that while we had anticipated this conclusion, it still seemed as though it would last forever. She emphasized that one of the greatest strengths of TV is its ability to foster a sense of connection among viewers.
Dan, portrayed by John, fervently wishes that his character and the series will be fondly recalled by viewers for the strong connection they formed as a TV family.
John shared with Us Weekly his wish that the series might resonate with viewers by revealing some common ground with their characters, stating, ‘Humor has been our saving grace throughout.’
He added, “I am going to miss it very, very much. Above all, we had fun.”
