In preparation for their upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in July, they have been making a more significant impact across the comic book scene as a whole. A clear demonstration of this will be hinted at during Free Comic Book Day, with Dynamite set to launch a special crossover between Gargoyles and Fantastic Four in October. A sneak peek of this project was teased in Dynamite’s offering for this year’s Free Comic Book Day on May 3, featuring a special issue titled Gargoyles: Demona.
As a die-hard fan of the iconic ’90s animated show, Gargoyles, I’m thrilled to share that the Manhattan Clan is joining forces with none other than Marvel’s legendary family, the Fantastic Four! This exciting collaboration marks a special one-shot crossover issue in October, penned by the brilliant mind behind Gargoyles, Greg Weisman. Joining him are artists George Kambadais and Jeff Eckleberry, who were part of Dynamite’s initial Gargoyles series. This reunion is a celebration of the series’ success, and I can hardly wait!
What is the Gargoyles/Fantastic Four one-shot about?
In Dynamite’s press release for the release, it explained the premise of the crossover:
Notable members of the Manhattan Clan such as Goliath, Elisa Maza, Brooklyn, Katana, and Nashville have received an invitation to explore one of New York City’s most remarkable and technologically sophisticated structures – the Baxter Building. However, things take a turn for the worse when formidable adversaries from both storylines collide, threatening their safety. Among these threats are Coldsteel, the villain known as Yuri Topolov, and the lethal Annihilus.
Fans can look forward to seeing Franklin, Valeria, and Gnash interacting until things go awry. At that point, not just their families (which include Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Thing, Human Torch, Broadway, and Angela), but they’ll all join forces, divide into teams, and rescue the situation in Manhattan, the Negative Zone, and beyond.
To date, it’s been revealed that covers for the project, created by renowned artists such as Lucio Parrillo (Dynamite), Mark Bagley (Fantastic Four), and Amanda Conner (Gargoyles), are in the works. It’s likely that additional cover artists will be unveiled before the project goes live this Fall.
What does Greg Weisman have to say about the event?
In his own words, Greg Weisman – who has quite a history with Marvel, notably working on “The Spectacular Spider-Man” cartoon and the ongoing “Spectacular Spider-Men” series in Marvel Comics – expressed that this upcoming event is all about kinship and family. He’s excited to unite the original Marvel family with the Manhattan Clan, as it seems fitting!
The initial part of the entire event is set to begin in a preliminary showcase within the comic series titled “Gargoyles: Demona #0″. This particular series stands out due to the involvement of Weisman, who will be teaming up with original co-producer Frank Paur. Together, they will provide an extensive exploration of the life of the character Demona, a hero turned villainess, delving into previously unseen aspects such as her family members and significant moments in her history. Following the Free Comic Book Day release, the full series will continue the narrative.
Gargoyles: Demona #0 is out on May 3, Free Comic Book Day.
Gargoyles/Fantastic Four will be out in October.
