Enthusiasts of gaming and computers now have a fresh blast from the past to enjoy. Developer Ruben Retro has created a replica of Windows 3.1, which can be played on the classic Game Boy Color system.
GBS Windows for Game Boy isn’t a replica of Windows 3.1 or any other version of Windows; instead, it’s a software created using GB Studio designed to mimic certain aspects of an older operating system’s appearance.
This software comes with a simulated BIOS screen and a command line interface for accessing its main menu. Upon startup, you can access applications such as Paint, Minesweeper, and the media player from this main interface.
A unique aspect of GBS WINDOWS for Game Boy is that it utilizes a tangible cartridge which is compatible with both Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance systems. Moreover, if you happen to possess a Game Boy Printer, you can actually print out artworks created within the Paint program.

When creating designs for the Paint application within GBS WINDOWS on a Game Boy, you’ll likely find it necessary to work with pixel art due to its compatibility with the D-Pad navigation. This is expected given that the Game Boy is being utilized to run a vintage operating system replica from past decades.
As a tech-savvy individual, I’ve stumbled upon an exciting find – GBS WINDOWS for Game Boy, priced at approximately €40 ($45). However, it appears this gem is currently unavailable as the listing on Etsy indicates it’s sold out. To ensure you don’t miss out when more stock becomes available, I recommend signing up to receive a notification.
It’s not surprising to see that people often yearn for the charm of the Game Boy, as various companies have attempted to recreate its unique atmosphere when it comes to handheld gaming devices.
I’ve noticed a trend, where innovations like the AYANEO Pocket DMG focus on developing fresh hardware that reimagines the essence of classic consoles. However, GBS WINDOWS for Game Boy opts for a unique approach by housing software within a physical Game Boy cartridge instead.
