After a long wait, Animal Crossing: New Horizons received a huge, free update! While a Switch 2 version is also available, the 3.0 update is free for all Switch and Switch 2 players. It introduces a lot of fun new features, including something fans have been requesting for ages. Now, with the new Slumber Islands, you can experiment with decorating ideas without changing your main island.
Whether you play Animal Crossing every day or are just returning after the update, the Slumber Islands are a completely new experience for everyone. While the core ideas are easy to grasp, it’s always good to have some help understanding new features in Animal Crossing. So, if you’re wondering what the Slumber Islands offer and how they work, I’ll guide you through everything you need to know to enjoy Luna’s Slumber Islands in New Horizons.
How to Get to the Slumber Islands

The Slumber Islands are different from the Dream Islands, but you’ll need to have unlocked Luna’s Dream Islands to try out the new sandbox mode. You can access the original Dream Islands after receiving a Luna Bed in the mail – this usually happens when you upgrade from a camping cot to a regular bed. However, you don’t need to use the Luna Bed to visit either the Dream Islands or the new Slumber Islands. You can use any bed from the regular game in your house if you prefer to keep your island decorated as it is.
Okay, so I’m super excited about the Slumber Islands! But apparently, just having the Luna Bed isn’t enough. I needed to get a new letter from Luna first, and that’s what actually unlocks the whole Slumber Islands thing. I didn’t get it right away, so I had to make sure I’d already checked out the original Dream Island stuff. Also, you need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to use it, which makes sense since it’s online. The letter just comes with the daily mail, so I had to be patient and wait for a new day to get it. It’s a little bit of a process, but totally worth it!
Once you receive the letter from Luna, you’ll be able to travel to the Slumber Islands. To start your trip, simply go to your bed and select the “It’s slumber time” option when prompted. This will take you to a special sandbox mode where you can change and build on the islands – it’s different from the Dream Islands, which stay the same. If you’d still like to visit a Dream Island, you can choose the “I want to dream” option, just like before.
What You Can (And Can’t) Do with A Slumber Island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

After unlocking the Slumber Islands, you can build up to three separate dream worlds. These islands are completely customizable – you can decorate and reshape them however you like without affecting your main island. Unlike the older Dream Islands which were just copies of your existing world, these new islands let you create something entirely new. When you start your first Slumber Island, you can choose between a small, medium, or large map to build on, giving you plenty of space to design your perfect dream getaway.
Slumber Island in Animal Crossing is a dreamlike place where you can collect things and hang out, but none of it is permanent. Anything you gather disappears when you wake up! It’s a great spot to experiment with decorating and, most importantly, collaborate with friends. Unlike your main island, friends can directly help you decorate and change the landscape on a Slumber Island, offering a new and fun way to play together.
If you enjoy gathering items to advance in the game, the Slumber Islands probably aren’t the best choice. You might have better luck visiting your friends’ islands using the Dodo Airlines service instead.
