Enjoying the first two seasons of “The White Lotus” involves witnessing the downfall of unkind individuals. They revel in mistreating others for their own gain at a luxurious resort. Yet, the series balances this with sympathetic figures who are delightful to support. Despite often ending up on the losing end, these characters serve as the ethical compass, offering a refreshing contrast to the pessimistic scenes. Unfortunately, Season 3 of “The White Lotus” seems intent on tarnishing its virtuous characters, resulting in an ending that falls short of expectations.
If the creators had shown us early on in Season 3 that all the characters were unlikable, it might be more digestible. Instead, they choose not to do so, which makes the ending of the season less satisfying, as if creator Mike White doesn’t mind its impact on the show’s finale.
The White Lotus Is Only as Good as Its Most Wholesome Characters
Initially in Season 1, the White Lotus resort’s main focus was on its staff and how they were affected by the guests’ behavior. Shane’s persistent grumbling led Armond to become frustrated, ultimately resulting in Armond’s demise due to his unwillingness to be mistreated. Belinda, hopeful after Tanya suggested starting her own spa, was later disappointed when Tanya failed to follow through, leaving Belinda disheartened at the season’s end. However, Quinn, a seemingly good character, managed to find happiness by abandoning his family and sailing with his new Hawaiian companions at the conclusion of the series.
From a passionate cinephile’s perspective, Season 2 ventured into uncharted territories, delving deeper into love and its complexities, particularly exploring how it can shatter and heal. Compared to Season 1, there were a handful of characters with questionable morals, but two standouts emerged who I couldn’t help but root for. First is Albie, who unfortunately finds himself on the losing end but gains valuable self-awareness and learns to stand tall. There’s an intriguing hint at the end of the season that suggests a potential future for him and Portia. As for Lucia and Mia, despite their intricate web of issues, they both manage to outsmart the wealthy elites who too often exploit them, finding closure in unexpected ways.
In essence, for much of Season 3, it appears that White and his team are preparing for more instances like these. Rick and Chelsea seem to be embracing change, Gaitok stays firm in his convictions, Belinda rejects Greg’s silence payment, and Piper is discovering her true self. Regrettably, Episode 8 largely reverses the progress made during Season 3.
The White Lotus‘s Season 3 Finale Fails to Do Right By Its Characters
Similar to the first two seasons of The White Lotus, Season 3 escalates towards a tragic incident – a shooting this time. The identity of the shooter remains uncertain until Rick, believing the man who he thinks murdered his father is back at the resort, loses control and takes action. This results in chaos, and numerous lives are lost, including Chelsea, who unfortunately gets caught in the line of fire. To make matters worse, following the episode, White discloses that he believes Amrita, Rick’s wellness coach, shares some responsibility for the shooting, as he intended for the characters in Season 3 to succumb to their primal instincts.
In essence, the decision made by the characters often leads to subsequent letdowns. For instance, Piper abandoning her aspiration to study Buddhism, Gaitok killing Rick due to prioritizing his career over morals, and Belinda using Greg’s money for personal gain instead of starting a spa – all serve as examples of this pattern. What stands out most, however, is the case of Belinda, who succumbs to greed and squanders her opportunity for self-improvement in favor of enjoying wealth. This scenario underscores the idea that wealth can corrupt, which has been an underlying theme throughout the series. Yet, it leaves viewers with a sense of disillusionment. Ultimately, very few characters manage to find harmony with their spiritual selves, and even those who do don’t emerge from their experiences unscathed.
The first three seasons of The White Lotus are streaming now on Max.
