It’s unfortunate that there hasn’t been an officially produced anime adaptation of Star Trek, given its long-running impact on popular culture spanning several decades. Nevertheless, the series focusing on the Enterprise persists, delving into the past, present, and future of the universe. Due to a dedicated fanbase, numerous hidden gems from earlier periods have been discovered, such as one fan’s recent unveiling related to Star Trek: The Next Generation. This discovery pays homage to a work by manga artist Rumiko Takahashi, as one specific episode featuring Picard and his crew echoes her creation in a subtle nod.
In the captivating fourth season of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” I stumbled upon an extraordinary episode titled “The Nth Degree.” This particular adventure saw the character, Lieutenant Barclay – often providing comic relief alongside Picard, Data, Worf, and Riker – encountering a bizarre predicament. As the starship Enterprise delved into exploring novel technology, poor Barclay found himself undergoing an intelligence upgrade that transformed him into a knowledge-thirsty genius.
To aid in his quest for enlightenment, he started using the holodeck and even collaborated with a digital likeness of Albert Einstein within it. The Star Trek creators cleverly slipped in a side-splitting reference to the popular manga “Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura” by scribbling an equation on a chalkboard, which served as a delightful Easter egg for fans like me!
A Star Trek Anime?
Regrettably, t Lower Decks has ventured into a distinct part of the universe, adopting a humorous approach to storytelling that aligns well with Adult Swim programming on Cartoon Network.
Despite wrapping up its run, “Lower Decks” managed to air five seasons and has been cherished by both Star Trek enthusiasts and animation aficionados. Notably, the voice actors from the series, Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome, stepped into live-action roles in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” reprising their beloved characters. It’ll be exciting to see if we’ll witness Mariner and Brad again in future installments, but the influence of “Lower Decks” on the Star Trek franchise demonstrates that the franchise can excel in various formats.
Urusei Yatsura’s Present
2022 saw the comeback of the beloved series “Urusei Yatsura” with David Production leading the reboot. Over two seasons, the team behind popular shows like “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure” and “Fire Force” concluded the story of Lum and Ataru. As the story reached its end, a third season for “Urusei Yatsura” hasn’t been confirmed yet. However, the revival has demonstrated that Takahashi’s works continue to be relevant in the anime community.
