13. Ian McDiarmid Makes Over-The-Top Acting Seem Completely Natural
Not many actors can successfully pull this off
In every performance as Palpatine, Ian McDiarmid consistently shines with a flamboyant, bold style that’s not just captivating to Star Wars fans like me, but essential to the character. Even before he transforms into Emperor Palpatine, his acting is larger than life, serving as a reminder that Palpatine is always putting on a show for the other characters around him.
As a movie reviewer, I must say that I was initially concerned about Ian McDiarmid’s performance as Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars saga, given the varying energy levels of other cast members. Yet, McDiarmid manages to make Palpatine’s dialogue feel authentic and fitting within the film’s overall tone, even when he delves deep into his villainous character. It’s not easy for an actor to maintain such consistency, but McDiarmid does so masterfully, making Palpatine a truly iconic figure in the Star Wars universe.
12. Star Wars Memes Have Enhanced (& Ruined) Revenge Of The Sith
Almost every line of dialogue feels iconic (& hilarious)
During my viewing of Revenge of the Sith, there were instances that caught me off-guard and left me puzzled. Upon reflection, I came to understand these moments were often used in Star Wars memes, which constantly crossed my mind. This added an amusing element, causing me to chuckle along with the crowd, but at times it interrupted what were intended to be serious scenes.
11. Obi-Wan Vs. Grievous Is A More Heart-Pounding Duel On The Big Screen
Every lightsaber flash feels more powerful
In the final lightsaber duel, I expected my adrenaline to spike, but what took me aback was how much faster my heart raced when Obi-Wan clashed swords with General Grievous. This battle has always captivated me, but watching it on the big screen makes it even more thrilling, highlighting the swiftness of their blades and the abrupt transitions between strikes. I found myself just as tense and vigilant as Obi-Wan was, relying on my senses to feel like I was witnessing this moment for the first time.
10. Obi-Wan Probably Confronted Grievous The Way He Did Because Of Anakin
Jumping into an area surrounded by droids is a very Anakin move
A fascinating point my brother brought up, which now seems quite logical to me, is why Obi-Wan chose to confront Grievous without any backup. It’s been clear that Obi-Wan often pauses to contemplate before taking action, but what stood out just before he left Coruscant was his heartfelt conversation with Anakin about their past. Given that Obi-Wan had taught Anakin, it’s also important to remember that teachers can be influenced by their students. So, it’s possible that Obi-Wan believed that such a courageous, impulsive act was characteristic of Anakin.
9. Revenge Of The Sith Is Visually Spectacular
Especially in the second half
It seems everyone agrees, the Star Wars movies are quite spectacular… But when discussing the franchise’s visuals, fans often focus on more recent titles like Rogue One or The Last Jedi, or they reminisce about how revolutionary the original trilogy was. However, even the prequels have been criticized for not meeting the same visual standards as the originals. Yet, this isn’t as true for Revenge of the Sith, and watching it on a large screen really brings that out.
Absolutely, excessive use of CGI and green screen backdrops may detract from the movie at times, but let me tell you, the grandeur, artistic flair, and inventiveness presented are nothing short of breathtaking. As we progress into the latter half of the movie, it seems every single frame is a visual tour de force, to my eye at least. The film Revenge of the Sith , even being 20 years old now, deserves far more acknowledgment for its stunning visuals and special effects.
8. Anakin’s Greatest Flaw Foreshadows The Empire’s Biggest Weakness
Overattachment leads to suffering and loss
In our conversation about the film, my brother pointed out that Anakin’s tale mirrors the Buddhist principle of non-attachment, explaining that holding onto something too tightly causes it to elude you. This resonated with us greatly, as it echoes Princess Leia’s words to Grand Moff Tarkin in “A New Hope”: “The harder you hold onto power, Tarkin, the more it will slip away from you.
The Empire’s undying obsession with maintaining order no matter the cost ultimately led to its demise. Initially, it held power, but this very trait proved fatal when a small Rebellion exploited their overextension, causing the Empire to crumble.
7. Anakin Had So Many Opportunities To Avoid His Tragic Fate
It makes the ending far more heartbreaking
In addition to observing, my brother and I found that Anakin had numerous chances to alter his fate. Despite Anakin’s story being deeply moving, with emotions relatable to all, it’s heartbreaking to reflect on the multiple instances where he might have changed course. He was consistently faced with choices in the movie, and although choosing rightfully would have had repercussions, it’s regrettable to realize how many times Anakin had the chance to change direction.
6. George Lucas’ Warnings Feel Just As Relevant 20 Years Later
And this represents our failure to listen
Watching the majority of “Revenge of the Sith” again was an enjoyable experience, yet some pivotal scenes resonated uncomfortably with me. I won’t delve too deeply into politics to avoid sparking debates in the comments, but it’s hard not to notice how many of the film’s warnings seem strikingly pertinent in today’s world. The emergence of authoritarian figures, the targeting of entire communities as scapegoats, siblings clashing because they perceive each other’s actions as morally wrong – these themes feel all too familiar.
In this movie, several scenes draw inspiration from events of the early 2000s, yet Lucas crafted his tales to seem ageless, making it unremarkable that the narrative remains as pertinent after twenty years. However, Padmé’s worries about the state of democracy in the Republic strike a nerve in today’s political environment, which I can’t help but find somewhat unsettling. It’s possible I’m overly sensitive to this, but it wouldn’t surprise me if other viewers shared my apprehension.
5. Battle Of The Heroes On The Big Screen Is Absolute Perfection
I just wanted it to keep going
Watching Obi-Wan and Anakin’s epic lightsaber battle was more than worth the ticket price. The intricate dance, the stunningly beautiful visuals, the music, the cinematography – it all came together to create a truly impactful experience on the big screen. While some argue that the fight went on too long, I couldn’t disagree more. Watching it in a theater made me yearn for an extended version of the duel. Knowing the effort poured into creating the battle on Mustafar only enhances my admiration for the scene.
4. Padmé’s Death Isn’t As Bad As Most Fans Think
Her previous scenes with Anakin show why
A frequent complaint about “Revenge of the Sith” is how Padmé dies, but upon rewatching, I found it less bothersome. The medical droid mentions they couldn’t fully explain why Padmé was dying, yet earlier scenes demonstrate that Padmé and Anakin could feel each other’s pain through the Force. Given that Anakin attempted to harm Padmé, and was in great agony on Coruscant, her death after childbirth seems more plausible considering their Force connection.
3. Revenge Of The Sith Really Is John Williams’ Best Star Wars Score
Memorable, emotional, and complements every scene
Among John William’s Star Wars compositions, they all shine remarkably well, yet I find myself struggling to decide which one represents his finest achievement. Although the melodies from A New Hope have become deeply ingrained in my memory as a favorite, I’ve come to appreciate how flawlessly Revenge of the Sith’s score harmonizes the entire film – from start to finish. Its tracks are incredibly memorable and resonate on an emotional level, seamlessly fitting with each scene.
2. Revenge Of The Sith Is Still Flawed – But A Great Movie Nonetheless
Its outstanding qualities more than make up for its problems
To be truthful, watching Revenge of the Sith in the cinema didn’t miraculously erase my criticisms. While the theater experience does make it simpler to immerse myself in the narrative, I found myself more lenient towards certain flaws, but the concerns about the dialogue, hasty plot points, and missed opportunities persist. Nonetheless, a movie doesn’t need to be flawless to be exceptional, and I continue to appreciate Revenge of the Sith for its strengths.
1. Revenge Of The Sith Is The Complete Star Wars Package
Everything that makes the franchise special is combined into one movie
Watching this film on the big screen, I came to understand that Revenge of the Sith encapsulates everything that makes the Star Wars series distinctive. Each unique aspect found in the other Star Wars films – from thrilling lightsaber battles, to humorous scenes and heart-wrenching moments, a sprinkle of mystery, romance, and more – is all present in Revenge of the Sith.
It’s truly remarkable how one movie can be so complex yet manage to keep up its tempo. By skillfully integrating numerous elements into a unified whole, George Lucas and his team really pulled out all the stops with this film, and I appreciate their determination. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith is an outstanding accomplishment, and it’s a pleasure to have witnessed it in theaters for its 20th anniversary celebration.
