This week, enthusiasts of Nintendo’s Switch in the United States got their chance to reserve a pre-order for the upcoming Switch 2. Various retailers made the new console accessible for both online and in-store pre-orders, though some gamers encountered difficulties. Nevertheless, many managed to place their orders successfully. Interestingly, one popular shopping destination in the U.S., Costco, has been largely quiet regarding the Switch 2, but that changed recently. Costco has now posted a listing for the U.S., indicating they plan to stock the Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle at launch.
Costco is recognized for stocking gaming systems, such as the Nintendo Switch OLED, which can be purchased online by members. Despite not advertising any listings for the Switch 2 prior to the pre-order rush in the U.S., the sudden appearance of this new item might seem unexpected. However, it’s important to note that gamers in Canada have reported finding the Nintendo Switch 2 bundle available for pre-order on Costco’s Canadian website. Therefore, while it is somewhat surprising, it’s not entirely out of the blue.
As a fan eagerly awaiting the Nintendo Switch 2, I regretfully share that, at least for now, it appears Costco won’t be taking pre-orders in the U.S. However, starting on June 5th – the official launch date for both the Switch 2 and the Mario Kart World bundle – you’ll find these bundles available. Interestingly, Costco doesn’t currently have a separate listing just for the Switch 2 console, but with the release date fast approaching, there’s a good chance that could change soon.
Costco’s Switch 2 Bundle May Have an Extra Perk
Besides the potential issue of arriving neither on time for pre-order nor at the full launch date, there’s an intriguing detail about the Costco Switch 2 bundle that catches my eye. The bundle includes a 12-month Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Individual Membership, which isn’t listed among the included items for other Nintendo Switch 2 bundles like the one with Mario Kart World. This could suggest that this is an exclusive bonus for Costco members. Since a year of Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack membership typically costs $50, this could be a significant advantage if it’s not offered in other similar bundles.
Currently, the listing for Costco’s latest Switch 2 doesn’t show its price, implying that any special features might come at an extra charge. Normally, the Mario Kart World bundle sells for $500 in other stores, so it’s reasonable to expect that the Costco version will be around the same price, possibly with an additional fee for the included Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
It appears that the Switch 2 bundle, while not labeled as “Members Only” at present, is expected to be exclusively offered for purchase by Costco members. Each membership is currently restricted to one Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle per week. This limitation may help prevent reselling or scalping, although it’s worth noting that Costco has experienced conflicts related to popular items like Pokemon cards in the past.
It appears that Costco is planning to offer the Switch 2 for sale both in-store and online on its release day in the U.S. If you haven’t pre-ordered and find yourself wanting to purchase the latest Nintendo console as soon as possible, it might be worth checking out Costco as an alternative option.
