Kyoto Animation is preparing to unveil its bizarre new anime titled “CITY THE ANIMATION” in July, and to generate excitement for the show, they’ve released a promotional video that matches its peculiar nature. While the title implies a sweet, everyday drama, “CITY THE ANIMATION” flips this idea on its head with eccentric strangeness and unexpected humor at every corner. Viewers who enjoyed “Nichijou” will find it familiar. However, the latest promotional material doesn’t offer many clues about the series’ plot.
The animated series, titled “City THE ANIMATION“, originates from the manga, “City” by Keiichi Arawi (Nichijou: My Ordinary Life)). This manga started publication in 2016, appearing in Kodansha’s Morning seinen magazine. To date, the series has been compiled into 13 tankobon volumes. Reading the manga won’t provide you with a preview of the story before the anime is released, and watching the show won’t clarify what’s happening in it either.
CITY THE ANIMATION Releases a New “God” Promo
If it hasn’t been adequately expressed yet, the animation titled “CITY” is a peculiar blend of comedy and surrealism. Following suit with the series’ quirky atmosphere, the advertising strategy for “CITY” has been just as unconventional. Last week, Kyoto Animation unveiled the “God Graffiti” poster, featuring a graffitied rodent. This week, the same rodent has been transformed into a video game character… simply because it seemed like an amusing idea!
The new promotion was shared on the official account (previously known as Twitter) of CITY THE ANIMATION. The vibrant, game-inspired poster features a rat within a TV screen, reminiscent of ’90s arcade games. The logo for the anime has also been updated to resemble classic arcade game logos. Despite the adorable design of the poster, its caption returned CITY THE ANIMATION to its characteristic quirkiness. “Games can be enjoyable!” it read. “The amusement, affection, and terror of CITY are displayed in a world where everything is possible within games.” Take a look at the poster below…
CITY THE ANIMATION Releases This July
The animation series titled “CITY THE ANIMATION” will be available on Crunchyroll this coming July, but the specific release date remains undisclosed. Notably, Keiichi Arawi’s previous anime, “Nichijou“, was renowned for its exceptional animation quality that seemed too impressive even for a slice-of-life comedy, which ultimately added to its humor. It appears that “CITY THE ANIMATION” is set to receive similar attention at Kyoto Animation. Tachi Ishidate (Violet Evergarden) is leading the series as director, while Tamami Tokuyama (Sound! Euphonium) is responsible for character designs and chief animation direction.
In simpler terms, the official summary for “CITY THE ANIMATION” states that it is a quirky, slapstick series created by Keiichi Arawi, who also produced “Nichijou.” The story centers around a poor college student named Midori Nagumo living in an ordinary city populated by people who are somewhat unusual. As the carefree Midori goes about her day, she unintentionally stirs up excitement and chaos within the city.
