Determining which masterpiece by Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese stands as his finest can be quite challenging. Some argue it’s “GoodFellas,” where many of its stars continue to thrive in Hollywood. One of the supporting actors, the late Louis Eppolito — also known as “Fat Andy” — later appeared in other films following a career in real-life law enforcement. Interestingly, he was convicted for having genuine connections to the mob, making his role in “GoodFellas” even more ironic. The extraordinary tale behind him serves as the basis for the new release “Mob Cops.” Recently, MovieWeb had a chat with Jeremy Luke, the actor who plays Eppolito in Lionsgate’s latest production.
I was at a Chinese restaurant and I said, ‘How are you?’ And I picked up the glass because this character had appeared in ‘GoodFellas’. That was quite surprising to me since he worked with Scorsese, who I also worked with. In ‘GoodFellas’, there’s a well-known scene where they walk through the bar and introduce everyone. So, it was just a bit mind-boggling.
Regarding Marty, it was delightful to see Luke reunite with several of his “Mob Cops” cast members. In fact, many of these actors starred in Martin Scorsese’s 2019 Oscar-nominated film, “The Irishman”. Luke mentioned, “Joey Russo, who plays Galliano, was also in ‘The Irishman’. He portrayed my brother in the same film. Danny A. Abeckaser, our director… Bo Dietl… There was quite a group from ‘The Irishman’ present… I found that quite intriguing and cool.
Louis Eppolito: From Dirty Cop to Actor
In the television series “Mob Cops,” Luke’s co-star who portrays the second corrupt cop is David Arquette, known for his role in “Scream.” Luke elaborated that having Arquette on set further amplified the meta aspect of their filmmaking process.
In an unexpected turn of events, just as I was recently revisiting “Lost Highway,” I found myself astonished to see Patricia Arquette, David Arquette’s sister, acting alongside Louis Eppolito in the same film. This discovery was particularly striking given that Eppolito had a significant role in “GoodFellas” as well. It’s fascinating how these connections between films and characters can create such a meta experience.
Among all the shocking exploits that Luke’s character exhibits in the series “Mob Cops”, there was one aspect that left him most astonished. As he admitted, “He was carrying out hits for the mob, working for the mob – but what really surprised me is how much he craved the negative attention and media exposure.” He adored the limelight and television so much. In fact, he appeared on the Sally Jesse Raphael show, a popular talk show in the 80s and 90s, which ultimately led to his arrest.” The world of Hollywood – it can either elevate or bring down someone. From Lionsgate, “Mob Cops” is now playing in cinemas, on demand, and digitally.
