Many Hytale players are confused about how to make glass. I was too! I spent a long time gathering sand and using a furnace, expecting to build with clear windows. But the game doesn’t quite work that way yet. Let’s clarify how glass crafting currently works in Hytale, what you can create, and why getting perfect glass windows isn’t possible just yet.
What Glass Is Used For (Right Now)
Currently in Hytale, glass is quite limited. You can only craft one glass item: the Empty Potion Bottle. There are no glass blocks, panes, or any way to build transparent walls. It’s a bit disappointing, particularly if you prefer modern, streamlined designs over buildings made of wood.
The process is simple: you collect sand, place it in a furnace, and power it on. After it melts, you get an empty potion bottle. Right now, that’s how the game creates “glass.”
This suggests a clear path for how future glass products will be made. It’s likely that as new types of glass are developed, the process will remain consistent: gather sand, melt it in a furnace, and then shape it.
How to Get Sand (Not Sandstone Rubble)

Many players, myself included, have found this part tricky. If you’re only finding sandstone pieces, you’re likely mining in the wrong location or hitting the wrong blocks. Real sand is found in deserts and on beaches. Once you locate these areas, you’ll be able to gather actual sand blocks instead of rubble. Be aware that this might require a lot of travel just to collect enough sand, and you might even return to find you still can’t craft glass – it can be frustrating, but that’s how it works!
It took me a full hour to get to the beach, collect about 200 sand blocks, and turn them into glass. I was really disappointed to discover I couldn’t actually make windows with it!
What About Windows and Building Glass?
If you’re looking to add windows to your builds in Hytale, it works differently than you might expect. Instead of using glass, you’ll need a builder’s workbench. You select the wood you want and then choose a window style for that material. These windows are made of wood, not glass, so they won’t appear transparent like many builders prefer.
Unfortunately, the game doesn’t currently allow you to create full glass blocks or panes. This is frustrating if you’re trying to build uniquely shaped or modern designs. The building tools are promising, but glass options are still lacking.
Final Thoughts
Okay, so about glass in Hytale… it’s a bit weird. Right now, you can technically get glass, but only as empty potion bottles. I can grab sand from the desert or beach, throw it in a furnace, and that’s it. If you’re hoping to build a glass house, you’ll be using wood for the windows – that’s how it’s crafted at the builder’s workbench. Honestly, it’s a little disappointing, and a lot of us builders are really hoping they add proper glass blocks and panes in a future update. We’re totally ready for it!
So, you’ll avoid the frustrating mistake I made – spending ages trying to turn sand into glass windows! It’s a fun way to add some life to your builds – just remember to be gentle with the animals!
