Upgrading workbenches in Hytale seems straightforward at first, but it quickly becomes challenging. You’ll find yourself looking up unfamiliar materials, exploring unexpected environments, and wondering if certain items are even available yet. Because Hytale is still being developed, the process can be confusing, so I’ve created this guide to help you upgrade every workbench, understand each tier, and find the materials you need without getting frustrated.
Upgrading the Workbench (Tier 1 to Tier 3)
Workbench Upgrade (Tier 1 to Tier 2)
You’ll begin with the original Workbench, which is essential for everything. The first upgrades are pretty easy to get. Copper and iron are found in forest caves – iron is deeper underground, but copper appears more frequently. Linen scraps are simple too: just defeat enemies wearing clothes. Skeletons in small buildings are a great source, and you’ll usually get them quickly. That’s all you need to reach Tier 2.
Workbench Max Upgrade (Tier 2 to Tier 3)
As you progress to Tier 3, the requirements become more challenging. You’ll need to gather materials like thorium ingots, cobalt ingots, heavy leather, shadow weave scraps, and essence of fire.
You can easily find thorium in deserts, specifically on the sides of mountains. Look for its distinctive green crystals and sharp ridges on the map. Cobalt is similar, but it appears in snowy mountains and is also found out in the open.
To make heavy leather, you’ll need hides from large animals like polar bears. Simply process these hides on a tanning rack. For essence of fire, defeat fire-based enemies found underground in the starting green area. Fire golems are the most common source, but you can also get it from fire mages, fire skeletons, and goblins with candle heads. Shadow weave scraps are dropped by humanoid enemies in the snowy villages found throughout the map.
Once all of that is collected, your original workbench hits tier three and is fully maxed for now.
Builder’s, Armorer’s, and Arcanist Workbenches
The builder’s workbench is refreshingly simple, since it doesn’t have upgrade tiers at all.
Building an armorer’s workbench is a little more involved. You’ll need copper ingots, bone fragments from skeletons, medium leather from animals or armored creatures, and Azure logs for both the first and second tiers. Azure logs are found in the blue-tinted areas of the starting zone – the trees are distinctly blue, making them easy to spot.
Tier three is where the challenge really begins. You’ll need to gather thorium, cobalt, shadow weave scraps, sturdy chitin, and a void heart. You can find sturdy chitin by defeating armadillos in the desert, and they usually drop one to three pieces each time. I’ve found the most chitin in hardened clay areas, although these zones are also full of dangerous enemies like hyenas and alligators.
The Void Heart is a tough item to get! It rarely drops from purple enemies that appear at night in any environment. I only found a few after playing all day, so be prepared to spend some time fighting nighttime creatures to get one. Once you do, you’ll be able to fully upgrade the Armorer’s Workbench.
The Arcanist workbench currently stops at tier one, so there’s nothing extra to worry about there.
Alchemist, Chef, and Farmer Workbenches
To build an alchemist workbench, you’ll need silver, gold, boom powder, and bone fragments. You can get boom powder by defeating goblins that throw bombs – these are more frequently found in desert and icy areas than where you start the game. Silver is usually found underground in snowy regions, and gold appears underground in deserts and fiery areas. Right now, the alchemist workbench can be upgraded to tier two, which is the highest level available.
The chef’s stove is capped at tier one for now, so there’s no long grind here.
The farmer’s workbench is simple to understand, but takes the most work to fully upgrade. You’ll get ‘essence of life’ from growing crops, and you’ll also need a lot of wood. At first, you’ll mostly use wheat and lettuce, but later you can grow carrots, corn, cauliflower, turnips, pumpkins, eggplants, tomatoes, and chilies. Reaching the highest upgrade levels requires a huge supply of essence of life.
You’ll eventually reach tier eight, but it currently requires items called blood petals, storm petals, and Azur petals. These items aren’t available in the game yet – I’ve searched everywhere and haven’t been able to find them. Because of this, it’s currently impossible to progress past tier eight, meaning the highest farming levels are locked for now.
Furnace, Tanning Rack, Feeding Trough, and Blacksmith Anvil
The furnace can only be upgraded once, and it uses materials we’ve already discussed. The tanning rack also has a single upgrade, requiring tough chitin and leather from creatures. Finally, the feeding trough only has one upgrade level available.
Okay, so the blacksmith anvil is actually kinda cool. To get it to the first level, you need to farm some linen scraps, light leather, iron ingots, and, annoyingly, venom sacks. Those venom sacks? You get them from spiders at night in the starting area, those flying beetles in the desert, and a bunch of other critters. But the good news is tier two is way easier. You just need essence of fire, essence of ice – which you get from those ice guys in the snowy areas – and essence of void from enemies that come out at night. Once you’ve got all that, the anvil is fully upgraded, and I can finally craft some decent gear!
Wrap-Up
That covers all the workbench upgrades available in Hytale’s early access version. Some are quick and easy, others take more effort, and a few still need further development. But now you’ll know exactly what materials to find and where to use them!
Having trouble finding darkwood for upgrades, especially if you grabbed the wrong type of wood by mistake? My guide to the Darkwood Trunk Location in Hytale can help! It’ll save you time and frustration when you’re trying to get those better upgrades and don’t want to waste effort climbing the wrong trees.
