For a period during “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” the USS Enterprise-D temporarily had a First Officer other than Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes). Over the course of the series’ seven seasons, Commander Will Riker declined several promotions to stay on board the Enterprise. Riker developed a strong reputation as one of Starfleet’s top-tier First Officers. Occasionally, circumstances called for someone else to take over as First Officer, but among the substitutes, there was one particularly exceptional replacement for Commander Riker.
In the 14th episode of season 5 in “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” the entire crew aboard the USS Enterprise-D experiences a strange occurrence where they lose their memories, forgetting names and roles. However, they still possess the skills to manage a starship. Riker proposes that Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) should lead due to the four pips on his collar, while Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn) suggests himself because of his Klingon baldric. Unbeknownst to them, a new crew member has secretly joined, who turns out to be none other than Commander Kieran MacDuff, the Enterprise’s First Officer (Erich Anderson).
Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Other First Officer Explained
Who Was Commander Kieran MacDuff?
Following the loss of their memories, the crew aboard the USS Enterprise-D eventually uncovers a list of high-ranking officers within the ship’s onboard computer system. The roster designates Commander Kieran MacDuff as the First Officer, with Commander Riker now serving as the Enterprise’s second officer. Although viewers are aware that Commander MacDuff is not entirely trustworthy, the Enterprise’s crew remains oblivious to any suspicious behavior from their seemingly reliable First Officer. By manipulating the ship’s computer data, MacDuff and his associates manage to persuade the Enterprise crew that they are engaged in a conflict with an alien race called the Lysians.
Commander MacDuff, disguised as an Enterprise officer but actually a Satarran, urges the crew to carry out their supposed mission and obliterate the Lysian command center. However, Counselor Deanna Troi senses something amiss, and Captain Picard starts questioning the genuine intent of their task. In due course, it’s unveiled that MacDuff is a fraud, using the ship to wage war against the Lysian Alliance. When MacDuff attempts to launch the Enterprise’s weapons, Commander Riker stops him with a phaser blast, exposing his deception.
Other First Officers Replaced Commander Riker In Star Trek: The Next Generation
Riker Was Only Replaced A Handful Of Times On TNG
In the series Star Trek: The Next Generation, while “Conundrum” was unique in that it featured an unidentified character suddenly becoming the First Officer without any explanation, there were other instances where a Starfleet officer assumed this role. Notably, in the two-part episode titled “The Best of Both Worlds,” Captain Picard is captured by the Borg and forcibly assimilated, which results in Commander Riker taking command of the USS Enterprise-D. In this situation, Riker temporarily assumes the rank of Captain and selects Lieutenant Commander Elizabeth Shelby (played by Elizabeth Dennehy) as his First Officer, despite their ongoing professional rivalry.
In the two-part episode “Chain of Command” from Star Trek: The Next Generation’s sixth season, Captain Jean-Luc Picard departs the Enterprise for a secret assignment. During his absence, Captain Edward Jellico (played by Ronny Cox) assumes command of the Enterprise-D. He clashes with Commander Riker almost immediately, eventually relieving him of duty and promoting Lt. Commander Data as the new First Officer. Despite this, Commander Riker maintained his role as the Enterprise’s first officer throughout the entire run of Star Trek: The Next Generation and was not promoted to Captain until the film, Star Trek: Nemesis.
